From what I read, it was a general protest against the republic's pro-Putin leader and his suppression of other voices.
The opposition leader has been jailed for allegedly spreading ethnic hate, which he and his supporters deny. They claim it is just because they oppose Putin.

Sure, but a lot of the time it's because the real world isn't visually cinematic.
That said, I would live some more realism to what war looks like in movies. Build the drama out of something else, like tension and characters...
