Early reports suggesting that the Jays just dealt Brett Wallace for Anthony Gose.
4 HR 20 RBI .263 BA .325 OBP at high A ball, he also stole 36 bases and got thrown out 27 times.
Yuck - not a great looking deal in my opinion. I think a guy with similar potential and speed could have been had for alot less than a young guy looking like he'll hit .300 30HR 100 RBI at AAA.
Now confirmed straight from AA.

Brett Wallace, who was supposed to the 1B of the future, is dealt for a younger, less polished CF in Gose.
I get that we have a logjam of OFers now with Bautista, Lewis, Wells, Lind and Snider, but that was a fact when we dealt for Wallace and moved him to first base.
It's almost a guarantee that Snider or Lind will play at first next year now??
A head scratcher for sure.

The amount Wallace has been traded you almost wonder if there are other issues. The guy's numbers look as close to a sure fire major league impact bat as you'll find anywhere in the minors. I don't even think Gose looks like a bad player but a guy playing mediocre A ball with (potentially) a high ceiling doesn't seem like good value in this instance.
Jays executives got hung up on this guy while scouting the Phils last year and overpaid for him pretty significantly at first glance. Bit of a stunner given that AA seemed to be pretty much destroying everyone in the trade market to date.

I like this trade for 2 reasons.
1. Wallace projects to be basically Overbay.
2. Gose is one of the top defensive outfielders in all levels of the minor leagues, and is hitting a lot of doubles, which when he gets a bit older, those doubles should start clearing the fence. He's projects to be a comparable player to Devon White.
Plus every Jays scout (and there are a lot of them) were unanimous in their belief that Gose will project to being an All-Star calibre CF.

I don't want to read into what it could mean too much, but with how far away Gose is from the majors, makes trading Bautisa even more likely to me.
I like the the trade, don't love it, but AA compared Gose could be a hell of a player especially with the comparisons he gave to Carl Crawford.

Gose is a converted pitcher, and sounds like he has the potential to be a 5 tool player.

I don't mind the trade BUT I am hoping they didn't trade for this guy so they can trade Bautista. If they Bautista this season, I am done with the Blue Jays. I just cannot stand seeing all the good players getting traded. Blue Jays cannot be in a rebuilding year every season.

This is the first year the Jays have truly started to rebuild.

30 year olds who are likely to regress in 2-3 years having a career year, no matter how good they are in the current year, have the potential to bring back solid long-term pieces. At the start of the year did you even give a rat's ass as to who he was? Most people thought (including me) he should've been non-tendered.
As far as Wallace goes, he has subpar defense and is underachieving offensively for a 1st baseman. He projects to have a bit more power than Overbay, but without the OBP skills or the eye. He projects behind guys like Ike Davis and Justin Smoak, who most scouts think are "just above average" 1st basemen.
1st basemen are easy to find, center fielders aren't. It's as simple as that. Lind can play 1B and should, but there are other cheap options that can be used until we figure it out. We really need a 3B of the future though.

Keith Law's breakdown of Gose:
Quote:
Keith Law
Gose's future dependent on tools"Anthony Gose had attracted first-round attention out of high school as a left-handed pitcher who would pitch at 92-96 with a potentially plus curveball, but he insisted he wanted to go out as a position player and remains more tools than performance at this point. He struggles to recognize offspeed stuff and doesn't walk, and despite good leverage in his swing has hit for almost no power in more than 1,000 pro plate appearances. He wraps his bat but does have good hand speed and seems to recover well once he gets his bat started. He's a plus runner, but his 57 percent stolen base success rate this year is comically bad."

This tells me that Wallace was not a good enough defender.
Adding big-time athleticism is exactly the kind of move I support.

Wait, I'm confused, how does this move point to a Bautista trade?! I think if anything this move points to a Bautista signing by the Blue Jays.

I doubt the two players are linked at all, basically Wallace was moved now they need a solution at 1st. Gose is years away.
Bautista I bet will leave but probably end of the season...

The more I read about Gose, the more I'm excited by this trade.
It's already been said, but getting elite athleticism in CF (with great potential as a 5 tool player) for a good bat at 1st base is a no-brainer for me. Wallace is probably near ready to make an impact at the major league level, but AA is setting the table for the Jays to have long term success with moves like this.
I view SS, CF, and C the most important positions to build around...besides pitching obviously. They are now stacked in each of these, which is very exciting for Jays fans.

I don't think he'll leave at all, he's not a free agent, and the Jays I don't think would have a problem paying him 6-7 million through arbitration.

I believe Jays have to offer Arbritration, if he rejects he is gone if I recall.....
Either way he is in his last year of his contract.

I believe in the Jays.

Y'know I wouldn't wager against Arencibia ending up at First-Base. From all accounts his defense is rated as no better then average at Catcher (with the Bat obviously being his better attribute) and Travis d'Arnaud is a more highly regarded all-around Catcher.

Aaron Cibia is major league ready, Darnaud is a teenager - it's unlikely that their careers will affect each other.
