Yeah that was specifically buying a low contract with term to fit in the cap. That’s it. And it was a bad play.

Exactly. The Hamilton trade tree is still going for the Flames and I don’t think they would have been better of even if you pretend the Flames took Barzal at 15 instead of getting Lindholm and Hanifin.

The trade was fine along with happened afterwards. What I was asking was do you think it was just filling in the gaps ? It signaled the Flames were all in making a deal like that. At least with that team they had stars and top picks. This version of the Flames isn’t close. It’s probably further away.

It was good asset management. I don’t think it signalled they were all in by any means. They traded a mid 1st for a potential top pairing dman and that’s a trade that should be made every chance a team can get. Once again, to me the Hamonic trade is when they went all in as his contract was the most enticing thing about him.

What!? All in with who? No it didn’t. It was stocking our team with young high end talent that we didn’t get in the draft. This is absurd.

If they are going to trade any first round pick without knowing where it will fall, it better have some protection attached.

Posters who insist the Flames did badly in the Hanifin trade and need to "learn from it" think the pick is too valuble to even listen to offers on lol

Our 1st round pick? There is a generational player available next year. And we might finish bottom 5. It is very valuable.

Even without said generational player, the top-16 of the first-round of the 2026 Draft looks way to good to give up in a trade.

I’m guessing “the pick” in reference to the Hanifin trade is the pick that was actually in the Hanifin trade.

Did I say our pick or did I say the pick from the Hanifin trade?

So you think when the Sabres said they were open to trading Byram and set out their expectations, Conroy offered a 2nd? I don't think real-world NHL GMs make insultingly low-balled offers. Teams of people on each side crunch analytics data and comparables, then arrive at something pretty close. Any serious offer for Byram (or Miller) from any other team included a 1st or equivalent young player/prospect.

The part about the Hanifin trade that stung was the Knights just needed to win the first round and the 3rd they got would have been a 2nd so it would have been an unprotected 1st, 2nd and Mirimanov which was a reasonable return.
I used to want to keep that Vegas pick at all costs and still think it is a very valuable chip but with them picking up Marner I am having a very hard time seeing that team fall off at all. I don’t want to use it for Byram but there are other players I would be fine with them using the pick in a trade

No, I think a first was certainly involved. But it wasn’t the Flames own first, for very obvious reasons.
And, if that’s not what you meant, then you misunderstood the string of discussion leading into your post. As, if it was an offer sheet, it would be the Flames 1st. Not any extra 1sts they acquired. Their own probably Lottery pick.

I thought they came on CP and picked one of the many fan proposals to send to the other team.

Golfed with a member of Alberta Springs yesterday and he said this is not the first time Tarnasky has been involved like this on the course. Likely to lose his membership, due to anger issues.
That being said other guy was a total ass and I have no sympathy for his FAFO.

No interest in Byram, would be really disapointed in management if they go this direction. Especially if they trade next years 1st even if its protected. This better not be a Sutter-esq retool where we start trading our firsts.

Do you have a list of the posters that made both these claims, so that we can keep track?
