Was in a Idaho bar on Friday night and ESPN had a pretty nice story and tribute for him. People seemed to be paying attention to the TV more than usual.
This tragedy has touched a lot of people and if anything positive can come out of it hopefully less people drink and drive.
I remember a game right before Christmas but I can’t recall the year but it was against Winnipeg. Johnny ended up with a hat trick I believe but had a beauty goal where he stripped Schiefele. It was special because the entire Dome broke out in a “Johnny” chant and his brother Matthew was there chugging beers and they showed him on the Jumbotron and everyone was cheering. I felt like in that moment Johnny was always going to be a Flame as it seemed like his family loved it here. So sad that we lost them both. Looking back on the 20+ years I have been attending Flames games my season ticket run was the 16-22 years and I think I have watched Johnny more than any other person player over the years and feel fortunate I was able to see so many exciting moments like Jagr’s lone goal, game 6 against Vancouver and Game 7 against Dallas. I also have fond memories of sitting in my company seats with my Dad just after Christmas in 2014 when Johnny scored 2 quick goals in a routing of the Oilers.

Going to drive down the corridor today to visit the memorial. I'll stop at the Canadian Tire here and pick up a couple boxes of chalk to drop off while I'm there.
Is there anything else that people are finding they are needing at the site?

I honestly never thought I would be writing a post like this. Yes, it was my last goal in the NHL. Yes, it was quite a nice goal. Yes, it was a beautiful pass above all. Unfortunately, life can sometimes be incredibly cruel. Thank you Johnny Gaudreau for being here and giving hope to all the guys with your incredible performances that even if they are not the biggest and heaviest, they can succeed at the world level in the NHL like you did. Sincere condolences to the entire family.

As much as my heart is broken for the Gaudreau family, I really feel for another beloved Flames icon, Sean Monahan. Just signed a five year contract to match the five years remaining on Johnny’s deal. People have probably seen the podcast he did just a few days earlier, talking about reuniting with Johnny and having their sons grow up together.
This is from an interview that was posted on NHLPA.com:
Quote:
“You enjoy every part of the way and looking back at my career so far, you realize how many friendships and relationships that you make with all sorts of people that last a lifetime.”
Monahan will have both longtime and new support in the stands for his first year in Columbus.
The biggest highlight of his offseason came when he and his wife, Brittany, welcomed their first child, a son named Leo, on May 27.
“It has been so amazing and given me a whole new perspective on life,” said Monahan.
“I’m really looking forward to raising him in the great city of Columbus, surrounded by some great friends. It’s also close to family for them to come to the games.”
I’m speculating of course but if Meredith and the kids move back to NJ to be closer to their families (which would be completely understandable), that dream probably won’t happen.
Either way I’ll be pulling hard for #23 this year.
I'm sure Sean will do anything he can to help the families, financially or otherwise. He'll play with heart and skill on the ice like he did every game in Flames silks, another good way to honour Johnny's memory.
But it'll be tough to look around the locker room on the first day of training camp, on opening night and not have Johnny sitting next to him eating a nutella sandwich. I'm hoping for the best for Monny - hopefully he can keep the injuries at bay.
Just got back from the dome, so sad it hits you like a ton of bricks when you see just how big the area of support is.
Wife and I were emotional, even my young boys were sad.
Can’t believe how well we did as a city.
Pictures and video don’t do it justice, I encourage everyone who can to make it down it’s absolutely admirable.
RIP Johnny Hockey.

Just got back as well. Wanted to go in the daytime after seeing it last night. It is bigger at noon today than 830 last night.
Some very touching messages. If you're not sure what to add, dont be afraid to spruce up an existing message or drawing with fresh chalk. Sometimes the words are already there.
Most important though is to echo the sentiment to try and go down in person, or even go again. Very moving.

Just about to head down myself. Usually train to the dome, where are people parking if even just for 10, 15min?

We parked literally across the street from the dome in the “bus parking” zone next to the BMO event center. Literally a 10 second walk across the street but it was 10am when we were there.

The drone shot and video circulating is absolutely beautiful. Really shows in full, how many have dropped by and shared a moment. Lots of players have re shared the video, and Meredith has seen it as well. Glad all of us are coming together at a time like this. Super proud to be a Flames fan and a Calgarian.
