I predict Tij goes 6-8. No way he gets past Seattle.

Outside chance at top 5, can't see him being anywhere near us at 10. Late riser in the draft and until be 18 until march. He has a lot going for him. Fantastic prospect.

Flames will be looking to trade up a few spots.

Unless they really don’t like any of the d prospects that are left, I can’t see them taking a forward over a defenceman. Outside of Dunn and Borgen, their D-core are all over 30 and they only have middling D-prospects in their system.

Kind of feels like they have to go D in a draft like this.

Agree I think Tij is the play if he’s on the board.

Doesn’t matter if it’s D or F. This rebuild is going to take multiple drafts / years not 1.

If we want to do it right we need to be patient. Get the D next year, who cares, but this is about taking BPA I think.

Next year is looking very poor for D

Yeah hearing that makes me even more interested in taking D with the #9 pick, and it already made sense given that D typically have a longer development curve it makes sense to get the cornerstone D at the first draft of the rebuild while forwards taken in 2025 and 2026 may have a quicker route to making an impact in the nhl.

All the more reason to get a second pick in the top 10-11 and I would feel a lot better taking Iginla (or a different winger/forward) if the Flames still have a pick for a top Dman

I don't think that's a statement to make confidently.

Draft rankings can change a lot in 13 months.

D are about twice as likely to bust in the top ten, and twice as likely to become a star player out of the later rounds, it's just a much hard position to project than Forward.

I think it depends who falls to us on D. You can't just take one for the sake of taking one because next year is poor.

Lot's of players climb in their draft years, like Iginla.

I hope they don't, and history would dictate they won't. If 2-12 are that interchangeable, what's the point?

The Flames already have 2 first rounders and may end up having 2 in the top half of the draft when the dust settles. You can address more than 1 position of need this year. You stick to the list and draft based on your internal rankings and you should end up with 2 good NHL prospects. Maybe only 1 has that elite top of lineup potential, but maybe both do.

Departing from the above and chasing a position is exactly how you end up with busts more often than a team normally would.

If everyone else believes 2-12 are interchangeable and one team believes in one prospect more than others wouldn’t that justify trading up? Acquisition cost should be lower than other years.

There will be clear winners and losers in retrospect, it's not like 2-12 are clones of eachother.

Really hope the Flames do acquire another top 10 pick. Now is the time.

It feels (without a lot of analysis) like good defencemen can be drafted a little later with more success than forwards - see Josi, Weegar, Carlson, Letang, Fox, Toews, Hronek, Matheson...

I think it's pretty general that great players can be unearthed later as plenty of really good forwards have been recently drafted outside of the first round in Point, Kucherov, Robertson, Stankoven, Hintz, Sebastian Aho, Trocheck, Guentzel, etc.
