Russia holds the tiebreaker. Is it because Russia won the head to head matchup? Is it goal differential? Not sure what it is.

Yes, it's because Russia won the head-to-head match. For TNA to advance Finland has to win.
While I don't love the idea of TNA getting eliminated already, part of me wonders if it will let JG and the Flames get back at the negotiations.

Not that I think the Finns need any motivation to get up for a game against Russia, but I think the thought of playing in front of 22,000 rabid Canadian hockey fans who will be cheering them on will be pretty exciting.
That said, i also think the Russians will love being the "bad guys" as well.

Injuries happen. Wouldnt it be worse if Johnny went to Korea in 2018 playing for the hated Americans and got hurt killing the Flames cup run?

Eye of the beholder I guess. I felt the that game was closer to being 3-0 or 3-1 than 1-1. At no point did I feel that they were going to win that game.

Does this happen in soccer? Are Real Madrid fans bitching about Cristiano Ronaldo's injury in Euro costing them a shot at something?
Or do they accept international play is just something the best players in the world have more or less the obligation to go play in?
I don't want any of our players to get hurt. I don't feel better because they get hurt playing in our jersey. Any player good enough for a national team (or North America/Europe) is going to be a target on the ice of every game he plays.
Backlund got a concussion. Backlund has been hurt most of his career. This is nothing new. He would have been hurt sooner or later in the NHL.

Yeah...have you seen the attendance for non-Canada games?

^^^looks like the ten minute mark of every Leaf game. People in those seats aren't there for the games. They're there for the schmoozing.

I remember the discussions around Backlund/Berglund back when they were still prospects, 2009-2010ish. Backlund was the inferior one, we'd be lucky if he turned out as good as Berglund blah blah blah. Now look how it's turned out. Is he Sutter's best first round pick? He might be.

And also a winger.
But yes, I agree - prime Juice was a treat. I believe AC is working on a compilation.

In soccer, fans have accepted this. Heck players leave midweek to go play for their countries. Sometimes on the other side of the world! Imagine Calgary Puck's reaction if Gaudreau played for the Flames on a Saturday night, flew to Kazakhstan to play for the US on a Wednesday and Saturday and then had to fly back to play for the Flames but was tired and the flames had to rest him?
Places like Brazil and MLS they play through the international calendar so teams are always missing players. Also the CHL plays through the World Juniors right? I'm sure lots of players get hurt there, that tournament is played at 100mph.

I'm sure it helps when the team you're cheering is actually... you know... Canada?

Wait til McDavid plays for Canada in a few years. Maybe even the 2018 Games if they go.

Patriotism and nationalism have been on the decline for the past 30 years IMO.
That's why people rag on McDavid during international play.

I don't think it's an issue. You're comparing cheering for Team NA in the World Cup, which there is almost zero incentive for any Canadian to cheer for, vs cheering for Canada at the Olympics.
These are not comparable things.

It sounds like the sad game against NA affected your outlook. Finland dominated the shots count and had several good chances to tie, meaning they were competitive in the game.
As for the Russia game, even if Finland comes in not feeling like playing - which I don't think they will - it'll be impossible to play soft when Russia comes at you at full speed and the crowd is on Finland's side. You just have to respond.
I wasn't going to watch, I wasn't even that into the Sweden game to be honest, but now the Russia game is interesting to a Flames fan. There's a small but not insignificant chance Finland can upset.
It's such a short tourament, either you have the talent or you come in fully prepared, and Finland wasn't fully prepared. I wouldn't want to let the coach off the hook just because the tournament went like you'd predict on paper. Typically Finland has excellent coaching in tournaments and I haven't really felt that Marjamäki is making confident decisions.

And to add, apart from a 6 minute stretch, Russia isn't that good
