My solution: Open up Windows Media Player. Select Tools->Option. Goto to the Performance tab and click the Advanced button. Under Video Acceleration, click the check box next to Use Overlays so that it is checked. This will automatically uncheck Use High Quality Mode option below it. Click OK till the end.
Does TSN use flash video? I thought they used a Media Player plugin (activex control). There is a FF plugin for Media Player. It should be just an activex install for IE though.

Thanks for the help! I think it's Internet Explorer too. Time to get me some Firefox.

Something is very wrong with my internet connection, it's almost as if it just stops every 20 seconds or so and drops all packets and loses connection.

This is not noticible if you are browseing the net as you are usually just reading things but for streaming music and playing games, the music will just stop and checking the netgraph for online games shows huge gaps where no data is being transmitted or recieved.

I have no idea what is going on, could this be a problem on my end or Shaw? I've updated my ethernet drivers, tried a new ethernet cable, tried a new router, plugging directly into the cable modem, etc. Note, I have the old Cybersurf modem, not DOCSIS.

I had a similar problem with my modem too, but it would drop the connection for longer but at randoms times. Phoned Shaw and went through all the troubleshooting possible. Eventually they sent out a tech guy and he replaced the power cord (the one that has the black box). He says they fry quite often. Worked flawlessly after that. Not sure if that is your problem though.

Anybody else have issues with the Firefox 2.0.0.8 update? I installed it last night and it totally hooped my system. Had all sorts of DEP warnings when Firefox froze any time I opened the browser. Even after making exceptions for it in the DEP list, it would still freeze upon opening so I had to go back to 2.0.0.7.

I'm running 2.0.0.8 and haven't noticed any ill effects.

Problem.

I went to use Firefox this morning and all my bookmarks have disappeared. I tried doing a system restore, to three different points in time over the past week, but they won't come back. Is there any way to retrieve them?

It used to be to get them back alls you have to do is go into the task list and end all firefox tasks, and then start firefox again. But I think they fixed that with v2 of firefox.

But it should make some backups as well, check under:

C:\Documents and Settings\{whateveryouloginas}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{whatever}.default

There should either be a backup bookmarks file, or a folder with them (depending on what version of Firefox you have)

Anyone else here on shaw having problems with the service going to crap every night? for about the last week and a half every night around 6 or 7 our internet becomes unusable til later in the night usually around 11ish. speed tests reveal we are getting about 10% of our line rating up and down, but the bigger problem is a astronomical ping.(400ms or more so even web browsing or playing video games is next to impossible)

Who is your ISP?
Where are you?

And I haven't noticed anything on TELUS.

Best place to buy a replacement DVD drive for my laptop?

Laptops tend to be fairly proprietary as to what you can accept. Personally, I would go to Compaq's site and find out what part numbers you can use, then hop on eBay. If you were in Calgary you could give http://compsurp.com/ a call and see what they have, but they are very hit-or-miss.

I have other spam and virus software and would like to remove McAfee Security Centre as it's redundant for me adn the messages that pop up to update it are annoying. When I try to remove it I get a box that says, "legacy program must be removed first."

What does this mean? Is it a bad thing to remove McAfee Sec Centre? If it's okay to remove it, how do I first remove the "legacy program?" Whatever that is.

If you can't find an internal replacement drive you might want to look at external drives connected usually via USB. It might be a cheaper alternative if portability isn't a concern.

Hey guys, I recently upgraded to a new computer and I'm having a few problems with Vista. Every time I leave my computer on for a decent period of time without being active, I return to find my account "locked."

After clicking on it again to log-in, my menu bar along the bottom of the screen (showing you the clock, various icons of programs open and the various windows you have open) disappears. To put it in Windows XP terminology, my Windows Explorer shuts down.

Any idea as to why this is happening and how I can stop it? Is there any way to make it stop locking my account automatically if I leave the computer for 15 minutes or so?

^ I dont know why its doing what its doing, but I think you can take the 'locked' option off under display, and screensaver, maybe power saver, settings...

edit: yep, uncheck the login window screen there.
