I still don’t think this team can compare to Tampa Bay or Colorado or St. Louis. Is signing another guy from the free agent market going to change that? I know we’re excited to get Huberdeau, as it is exciting, but going for another run isn’t the best move. The team lacks speed as a whole and there a generational draft this year. I really want a rebuild around getting as many draft assets as possible. The core has changed which I’m happy about but essentially now it’s Huberdeau and Tanev’s team. Still not close to Colorado.

So I'm down at the cabin since early yesterday afternoon. Cell phone coverage is spotty at best. Out for a wall last night and run into a couple my lady friend knows from Calgary. The girls start talking and I'm talking to this guy I have just met. Flames come up and he was like "yeah they sent Tkachuk to Fla"...i was surprised by the destination and asked the return. He couldn't remember exactly but said the one guy was named "weezer " or something like that. Clearly not a hard core fan. Anyhow I had resigned myself that it was Weegar and a couple draft picks and likely a prospect. I thought about it more after getting in bed for the night and realized that money probably didn't work without someone else coming back. So I went to sleep and figured I would find out in the morning when coverage us much better for some reason.
Jonathon friggin Huberdeau?
Ok then. Pretty good start to the weekend .
Great deal.

think trading Valimaki makes a lot of sense. No idea how the pairings would shake out, but Weegar, Andersson, Hanifin, Tanev, Kylington and Zadorov is a heck of a blueline. Mackey can easily be the 7th defenseman in that situation, leaving Valimaki way too buried on this blueline.
maybe Valimaki can serve as a sweetener for taking Lucics contract, but I'd also be fine with flipping him for a comparable forward.

Weegar has been a lottery machine defensively for over a year. He's much better in transition and a better passer but he tries to do too much and gets into trouble because of that.

A French Canadian millionaire who plays in Florida spends his summers in Calgary???

I took a quick look at his social media. He's not very active on Twitter, mostly retweeting things posted about himself. He's slightly more active on Instagram. Most of his offseason pictures are in the Montreal area and his offseason workout photos are in Montreal.
He does have a couple photos in the Banff area 2 years ago and it looks like he came to Stampede 4 years ago. So, I guess that confirms he has willingly chosen to come to Southern Alberta at least a couple of times in his adult life.

I just wonder how high other teams are on Valimaki as a prospect anymore. Kylington is more known now.

With Sutter for another year and the other quality pieces we have. A complete tank to get Bedard was not in the cards. So many teams have lined up for full tank (Hawks, Kraken and Coyotes) we were likely to have nothing more than a few percent chance at getting him.
I do agree that we are likely not good enough to challenge Avs or TB. But we are in the conversation at least this year. Have a close look at our contract situation after next year and it becomes clear that we can pivot easily to retool if we are not close to contending. We could sell off hard beginning this trade deadline and have enormous cap space to monetize for a proper and serious retool. While still keeping a few younger pieces for that new team (Andersson, Kylington, Mangiapane, Vladar, Wolf etc...).

Frank Seravalli says that the Canes were deep into talks with Calgary on Tkachuk. I wonder what their offer was?

Yup....Valimakis trade value would be very low in comparison to what bt would likely be shopping for. No one even knows if he is NHL caliber yet.
Kylington would be the play if they go that way even with his foibles.

Do you seriously think the Flames were going to rebuild with Sutter?
If they tank, it’s because they stink, not by choice
Their hope is now on Huberdeau. Hopefully they can get some pieces to support him

I believe he did, and apparently Calgary was not on his list. So lets hope he signs a long contract to stay in Calgary.

I really like this trade, but have to think there is a pretty big risk Huberdeau doesn’t sign here which I think the Flames and Panthers knew which is why the rest of the package was so good. As long as the Flames manage the asset properly I still really like it.
Could still turn Huberdeau into the package a lot of people were wanting prior to the trade deadline or draft next year (Ie. budding young high end player + blue chip prospect + 1st). I really think Tre did a great job of not going full rebuild by backfilling losses with a premium asset to keep the team competitive in a weak Pacific division (which may not be weak in a season or two) and still have flexibility to rebuild with that asset if a shift in direction needs to happen.
This is Grade A asset management.

I’m guessing it was a package around Necas and Teravainen and picks/prospects. The Canes could have put together a pretty attractive package.

No kidding. Everyone saying he's a pass first and assist machine, but the dude had so many chances to pass in the video and he decides to absolutely snipe it.
Looks like he can surely do it all at a high level.
