Short answer: no.

Long answer: hydro power depends on height. Without dam height, you don't generate much energy. It would make much more sense to place the turbines at a location where there can be a height differential, and wire the energy over.

If Salt Lake City can have MLS, Calgary surely can. There seems to be a committed and engaged ownership group with a stadium plan and latent corporate support.

The question marks for Calgary are the historical lack of fan support and can its match day revenues (which are shared with the league) balance out the inability of Calgary's geography to help land the big (US) tv contract.

A flexible 20K to 40K stadium will help.

IF MLS ever gets to expand to 28 and up, Calgary is in the conversation. It will be the largest soccer league in the world by number of clubs with ~23 by 2018 and no pro/rel system so 28 clubs isn't too far fetched.

The biggest problem with MLS in Calgary is that we are not in the US. Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver can get away with it because they are major North American cities/metros. We're in the second tier, and every single second-tier city in the US is ahead of us. MLS in Calgary is a pipe dream. The NFL is delusion.

Edit: Though we probably could at least muscle into the conversation by showing actual support for an actual team. But until an NASL team shows promise, dreams of MLS in YYC are DOA.

It is likely we need to have a strong NASL team with a few season under our belt before we can consider an MLS team, unless the Flames group wants to skip that step.

That said, unless there is a proposed 5-10k soccer stadium proposed somewhere, a soccer team should be considered a supporting tenant of a major multi-purpose stadium. Ergo, the Stamps and future MLS franchise could share a field. I believe this is what might be in store for any future development for the Stampeders, but I haven't done any research lately so I could be off.

Again, do not take what you see there as a final design. This is a standard arena model whose purpose is to show a transitional ceiling design concept. Nothing more.

I would not, in any way, assume this is a final arena concept for the Flames.

I'm having lunch with KK on Friday I'm sure he'll tell us the same story he did last time. "Announcement should be made in 6 or so months". Get's frustrating after a while.

It looks similar to the layout of the Consol Energy Center.

It looks like directly above the lower bowl, you have an open concourse, where you can see the ice from the concourse level, then above it looks like two levels of suites (as opposed to Consol's one level), then the upper deck.

But, like Muta said, if the animation was produced to showcase the moving ceiling, the seating bowl is not likely part of the design.

- One primary location (re: sporting/entertainment district)

- One location for Calgary Transit (SunAlta Station)
- One main parkade
- Major concerts and sporting events can operate simultaneously (hockey and big concert, football and small concert, etc).

Here's where it COULD go:

thanks technomad on SSP for the above image
Man that combo stadium, arena building looks sick. if we had something like that I'd buy Flames, Stamps, Hitmen and Roughnecks tix for life. Hell, I'd probably buy soccer ones too lol.

On a related note, that moveable roof is cool too. Kinda reminds me of BC Place and how they have a faux roof for soccer. That would make Hitmen and Roughnecks games more intimate - better fan experience for sure.

Something like this would also blow Edmonton's arena and Regina's stadium out of the water. Actually it would blow anything in North America out of the water.

West Village, Big Four Building site, North Stampede (just west of the bus barns) and the Fire Park.

Pretty sure, by now, they know which site they want.

Doesn't Fire Park have an underground subway station built in?

That could be real helpful.

Omg the Big Four would be amazing!!! Would ease train congestion, close to 17th ave. Great choice imo

It does. Also very high off the river and a huge empty space, easily accessible from deerfoot, HWY 1, memorial, Barlow and city center. But I have a Northeast Bias.

Too hard to party after the games. I would have to cab from downtown to the game, then after the game cab from the NE to 17th ave or 1st street, and then cab home. Or drive to the game, stay sober, then park downtown, party, cab home, then come back the next day for my car. Pffffff.

If its downtown, you get off work, grab dinner and drinks. Then go to game and have more drinks. Then walk to post game drinks. Then jump in a cab and go home.
