I agree, make an episode covering events from far back, and another covering events during Robert's Rebellion, including the Tower of Joy, so that Sean Bean can have a cameo and it makes things interesting enough for the duration of the season without catching up to George too quickly.
That would be so enthralling if they did it.

He sees through the weirwoods, maybe the weirwood has a younger Ned Stark in front of it.. on his knees, confessing to the Old Gods what he has done at the Tower of Joy, the promise he has made to his sister and who he is protecting.
Bam.

Sean Bean slip up? He's not yours? Well then who's is he?

He said something similar in an interview a few weeks ago too: http://www.vulture.com/2014/07/sean-...ones-chat.html
Quote:
Since you're almost done shooting Legends, that might mean you have a window in your schedule if Game of Thrones needs you back. There are flashbacks that they could be doing for season five ...
[Excited] Are they? Really?
I could be wrong, but I think they might show flashbacks via Bran's connection to the heart trees.
Oh, yeah, yeah! And I'm his father, so that would be great fun! Just to go back to that for a while, it would be such fun to do. It would be great! It would be bizarre, but it would be great! So I guess if they're going to do flashbacks, then yeah!
Well, it's just my theory ...
But it's a good theory! And that should happen, shouldn't it? I've definitely got some unfinished business that needs to be resolved there. I'm obviously not Jon Snow's dad. And you need that to be revealed at some point, don't you? So Bran would kind of be the one having the flashback, and he would see Ned praying, right? And revealing those things? You never know what those guys are going to do with that. It's got to be something special. But I'm into that. I certainly would be into that. Print that! Give them a nudge. [Laughs.] Hopefully I'll get a call soon.

I just finished the marathon and am now at the end of the 5th book. Are there any estimations on the release of The Winds of Winter?

Last I read there was speculation the release date would be announced this year, but that hasn't panned out yet. Next year at the earliest for the hardcover, if you're optimistic.
The last thing resembling "news" on the release date subject I have seen was some articles based on a Q&A with his editor back in late May, who basically said she has a hundred or so pages from Martin as of 2013, and that no release date has been set. Oh, and that there might be 8 books.

I wouldn't be shocked if it ended up being 9 (6 being split into two and 7 split up into two)

I hope he doesn't run into the same issues with the rest of the story that he had with Feast and Dance. He restarted everything after writing a lot of material with a 5 year jump after Clash, then split book 4 in two because it was too big, then had trouble with Dance and how to proceed in Mereen without Dany as a POV. Hopefully he learned from the experiences.

Ha! I'm in the same boat. Finished one through five over the summer, and now I'm itching for more.
There are three or four spoiler chapters out there to read for winds if you can't wait.

Has anyone else picked up The World of Ice and Fire? It's a smaller book than I was hoping for, but it's been interesting to read so far (I'm just up to the section devoted to Maegor the Cruel). The artwork throughout the book is absolutely stunning.

File this under "not surprised at all" but the Winds of Winter will NOT be coming out in 2015:
http://www.vulture.com/2015/01/winds...=twitter_nymag
Now I definitely need to do a re-read, I've forgotten so much of the book content since finishing book five 2 years ago (has it really been that long?).

It is more like 3.5 years if you read it on release.

I've given up on Martin ever finishing the series, there's no way he lives long enough to see it through. My only hope is that the TV series writers are comfortable enough with the ASOIAF universe that they can capably finish telling the story

He's only 66, it's not like he's knocking on the door or anything. 15 or 20 more years to put the finishing touches on TWoW and two more books should still give him plenty of time to do other things afterwords.

I'm sure it will be on YouTube soon, but here's the season 5 trailer: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10152715877082734
There are a few crappy cam recordings from the IMAX showings on YouTube, but this is actually from HBO.

When I look at him I don't exactly think healthy lifestyle. I'd be shocked if he gets past 75

“People are going to die who don’t die in the books, so even the book readers will be unhappy," he said. "Everybody better be on their toes. David and D.B. are even bloodier than I am.”
Interesting...my guess is Stannis.

They did this a bit last season with characters at the wall. My guess is more minor in Podrick with Gendry taking his spot in the show.
Maybe some of the characters around Daenaerys like Grey Worm or Missandei.

If I had to guess I'd go with Jorah and Brienne.
