Chris Scott might. Maybe Danielle Smith, too, when she has to go back to serving dinners in her train car.

Doesn't he make his money grifting off the anti-vaxx rubes? He isn't employable in the traditional sense, but that's never bothered the rubes before.

His most viewed blog post has...16 views. Many are under 5. I think he's milked that rube well dry.

I guess I underestimate that section of the population. It's funny because while a bunch of us here obviously disagree on politics or particular policy matters, we're all somewhat in the same ballpark. I don't think that people who are from the slightly-left leaning to the slightly-right leaning are so at odds that they can't just get along, do their jobs and no one really cares. But the extremists at either end of that scale are another matter.

Breaking down the $1.22B Calgary arena deal: What's included, who's paying

https://calgaryherald.com/news/local...l-need-to-know

The city portion of the deal comes from funds rolled over from the previous deal, with money from the Financial Stability Reserve making up the difference. Calgary Coun. Sonya Sharp said there would be no hike to property taxes to cover the city’s investment.

“No added taxes to taxpayers. There’s the question, that’s the answer,” Sharp said.

Until the next budget cycle when they replenish the financial stability reserve...

Calgary councillor says this won’t require a tax increase. She’s lying. I spent many years in local government and she’s not telling the whole story.

It's like raiding your emergency fund to pay for an RV and a quad.
So I guess in that sense, seems about right for Alberta.

I think it's becuase they've been banking this fiscal sustainability fund for so long planning on this expenditure that the money has already been collected from us. But it is still our money. These are weasel words, and you have to wonder why they are using them on us at this point.

Using reserves is part of it. Another is using grants that could be used for other things, such as failing infrastructure, health care and education. These strategies will cause tax increases.

I mean...she's a politician. Did anyone actually believe her in the first place when she said it?

I’ve seen politicians make similar claims that some citizens believed. My city went through a similar thing years ago (much smaller scale) with the same claim being made. It was believed by some - even by elected officials who believed advice from admin. (I know, right.)

Are they allowed to use the FSR for this purpose? Admittedly, I don’t know the whole story, but when I read this:

Quote:
The reserve is to be used for the following purposes:
• a contingency fund for operational emergencies, urgent or contingency
capital expenditures, and to compensate for unplanned revenue
reductions with significant financial impacts;
• investment income from the reserve would be used to fund one-time
operating budget expenditures.
That doesn’t seem to apply? I got that from this document: https://www.calgary.ca/content/dam/w...ty-reserve.pdf

Unsurprisingly, the reason that fund exists seems to be as a contingency fund for when things go wrong.

And to top it all, in this long-range plan for the city, that FSR is already $299m committed? (Page 16 at the bottom of the page https://www.calgary.ca/content/dam/w...lan-Report.pdf)

Someone correct me if I’m just out to lunch here.

All spending causes a lack of a tax decrease. Toombe puts this at $84 per a household in perpetuity
