I am so sick and tired of players leaving Columbus.
They just can't get ahead.

At least they're not like Buffalo, in terms of giving absurd contracts to players who don't want to be there.

They shot their shot as a middle tier team a few years ago. It's a good hockey market, but not the most attractive place to live - so it takes a good relationships with the players to make them to want to stay.

They built it with Atkinson, and with Nash for a long time - but for whatever reason their latest group of players have not enjoyed it. Could it be related to management/culture around the organization? We don't know much on that front. Something has definitely been off for a bit though. This entire last season with Torts was just bizarre, and it was pretty clear he had no desire to return. They also dealt a disgruntled player (Dubois) for another disgruntled player (Laine) who has had rumours around him of wanting to get to free agency so that he can run to one of the California/beach cities in the league.

It's why when we have players like Johnny Gaudreau openly stating they want to sign an extension, it has to be seriously considered. It means something to have players who want to stay in less desirable market rather than run off to a California/New York/Florida based team.

I'm not. I could really care less about the Blue Jackets, they are just one of those teams that exist in the East.

I think Columbus is one of the nicest cities in the Midwest (after Minneapolis and Evansville). But I guess that's more for the middle class. Columbus generally has a better economy than most other midwestern cities. It's a lot better than St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City and Des Moines by any metric.

I don't really understand why players re-sign in St. Louis but not Columbus.

Seth Jones is not a free agent this off season. He has 1 season left so if someone wants him they will have to trade for him. He's just saying that he won't sign an extension with them probably in hopes that they will trade him this off season.

St. Louis doesn't really have a recent history of having players re-sign into free agency, at least not top tier players.

They did land Torey Krug...on an awful contract, but also lost Pietrangelo.

Yeah, it's the exact opposite of what we have Gaudreau. One year left before they hit UFA, Gaudreau has said he wants an extension and Jones is saying he does not want an extension.

Sure, that type of statement will definitely make it interesting in the offseason.

I would think the Jackets have no choice but to trade the player

Jones has a 10 team NTC. They should have traded him before last season, when it kicked in, I guess.

I don’t see him getting much of a raise as a UFA, if at all.

I have a feeling Taylor Hall will be a Flame this off-season.

The guy is a number 1 dman, he makes $5.4m per season

I would think he will get a large raise for sure...

I wonder what Boston does. I definitely see a world where Calgary and Edmonton both come in with 6-7 year offers, does Boston go term? Someone (Lebrun?) was speculating they'd be in the 3-4 year range.

I'd love to sign Hall. This team needs the skill.

Define large. I would bet, with his numbers and injury issues, he can’t ask for more than, say Dumba, Ellis, Krug, etc. Herman only makes a couple million more and Jones is no Hedman.

At his age, if he becomes a UFA I would think his next deal is right around $7 to 7.5m per season

Sure he can ask for more than Dumba or Ellis or Krug.

Jones is better than Krug, and Krug signed for $6.5m as a UFA

I agree Hedman is likely the best dman in the league, however there are 10 other dman that make more than he does.

This again?

So the team is going to blow its UFA money on a player who plays a position that is entirely the strength of the forwards already?

I dont get this thought process at all.

Now if one of JG/MT are gone beforehand, then sure it makes some sense but as the roster currently sits, thats madness.

The Krug contract is regarded as pretty bad though. As are, in general, the ten contracts above Hedman’s. I’m betting the GMs who signed deals with Trouba, Karlsson, Subban, OEL, etc might not do it again if they had a do-over.

Sure, with a player like Jones who is a number 1 dman.

There will be a NHL teams that are going to offer him money.

My guess however, he will be traded.

Yeah....Seth Jones is going to get PAID.

It will be North of 7M im guessing....at least as long as their is a bit of a rise in revenue as expected next year.

CBJ are in a weird spot. The MET is so hard to compete in.

CAR/NYR look set to be strong for a long time
PIT/WAS have another few years, but a decline is inevitable
NYI/PHI will always be competitive, but it wouldn't surprise me if they finished anywhere from 1st to 6th.

Even NJD is a wildcard. Their forward group is deeeeeep with young players. Blackwood could be good enough. They're really just missing an anchor on D, but they have the cap space and assets to solve that (and quite a few internal bullets in the chamber). It's definitely a team that could catch fire...or continue to languish.

Then CBJ...not young, not old. not great, not awful (the last few months notwithstanding). They don't have very much nailed down beyond next season. The prudent thing would seem to be a 2 year re-tool.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Patrick or Frost as a centrepiece for Jones.

According to Protzline, John Davidson will push to trade Seth Jones (probably around the Draft) rather than let it become another Panarin situation.

https://theathletic.com/2622422/2021...act-extension/

Also brings up a good point about there being an organizational flaw that seems to drive top players away from Columbus.
