When we aren't receiving cap back and opened up 3.75m cap space without retention on Zadorov, I'd say that's a big win.

Well, the owners would say it's a big win. Cap space doesn't do much for me unless they use it on something before the end of the season.

It’s the most valuable asset in the league this year. Having cap space opens up trading opportunities.

Of course they would. But, this also allows Conroy to sell on the other 3 UFAs who are both paid more, play better, and should get a better return over Zadorov. It's good to have those vacant retention spots when trying to get the best return.

Agree with both of what you said, but again until they do something useful with that space it doesn't mean much to me.

100%. Talk is cheap when it comes to GMing. I think that's why many were indifferent to Treliving. Talked the big talk, was always kicking tires, but nothing came of it. Our team rarely got better save it some big trades (Hamilton, then Lindholm/Hanifin).
Conroy has the ultimate test this year, and arguably a harder first year than Treliving who inherited a team with a plan to rebuild. Retooling is way tougher to tackle. I hope he is still selling the UFAs and gets a good price out of them.

It’s just so weirdly pessimistic to me to say “yeah whatever, unless he executes”, while he made moves to set up the opportunity. Like, the target is clear… to utilize the space. The time to criticize that is if nothing happens… that’s 3-4 months away.

Trying to single out one potential trade partner (yes, interpersonal relationships matter for GMs) and demanding ‘massive overpayment’ is probably a bad start for a young GM. Conroy probably wants to be seen as reasonable, but firm, and not a clown.

The whole way a lot of fans talk about trades is cringe. They aren’t a combat where you beat your enemy, or compel them through cunning or intimidation to act against their own interests. It’s a market. No different from selling a used bike on Kijiji. You put up something for sale and the highest bidder takes it. There are often complications around contracts and conditions. Lawyers and capologists have to get involved. But it’s still a market. When two parties agree on the value, they have a deal.

Nobody is being critical. And the same should be said about getting praise though (3-4 months away and once the space has been utilized).
Until then...

Taking a while to get to 5000

^^ My favorite is when people suggest a deal needs "a sweetener", and then suggest a random 5th round pick or 4th line tweener

If they don’t have it the option is closed. If they do have it they can make a deal. Yes, if the deal isn’t good enough they won’t but without the space they can’t even negotiate.

One nice thing about having space is you can get assets for nothing at the trade deadline to facilitate trades between other teams

The Leafs offer was probably no more than a 3rd round pick in the upcoming draft and the Flames needing to retain half. Tre paid a 3rd for Zadorov 3 years ago and I can’t see him paying more.
If the Leafs offered a 2nd round pick in the coming draft with Flames retaining half, Conroy would have taken that.

The Leafs don't have a 2nd round pick in any of the next three draft years.

My guess is the Leafs offered a single 1st for both Zadorov and Tanev with 50% retention.
Which for 50% retention on two players would be a pretty light return IMO

I don't think he would have, as he needs 3 retention spots left for the 3 better UFA's.
