Once Devon Travis comes back that bench will be a bit more palatable with Goins on it.
Seeing Josh Thole on that bench is so agonizing though.

So I take it Pompey had a less than stellar pre-seaon?
Or is it just better to get the young guy more playing time at AAA, same as Ceciliani?

Pompey had a decent spring training from what I gather.
From what I read they want Pompey to get regular ABs and it was basically take one of the spots from Saunders/Pillar/Bautista (which wasn't going to happen) or go back to Buffalo. They weren't going to give him the 4th outfielder spot, again because he would not be getting regular ABs.
I imagine he will be the first call up if (more like when) Saunders get injured.

The Jays weren't thrilled with Pompey's fielding. Needs big work to be a every day major league player. Can't remember where I read that though. I think it was a TSN article.

Thole drives me bonkers. He's absolutely useless other than catching for Dickey. There were rumors over the Winter that Gibbons would have been more than happy if they hadn't picked up Dickey's option because having Thole on his bench completely limits what he can do. Basically a waste of a roster spot.

Could not have said I any better myself. Those two being a package deal ups my resentment level towards Dickey to unreasonable levels.

Taking Carrera over Lake is a real head-scratcher to me. Carrera is a switch hitter, but that just means he can't hit from either side of the plate and is defensive is very poor. I thought Lake put together a solid spring training.

Agreed. Lake had a better spring than Carrera. Though Ceciliani had a MUCH better spring than both Lake and Carrera, he's got options.
I would've chosen Lake as 4th outfielder because I think he has more natural ability and athleticism than both Carrera and Ceciliani. I see Lake as potentially becoming another version of Rios when Rios is at his best.

Agreed about Thole, he's the one that stands out for me.....and not in a good way. Basically a black hole of offense. Be a nice day when he's gone and the team has other options.

Carrera isn't a switch hitter, just hits left. Lake is hot garbage IMO, so not too disappointed he didn't make the club.
Ceciliani had the best spring of likely any Jays outfielder, but ultimately a victim of the 'options' game, which is unfortunate. I think we'll be seeing him sooner than later though if he continues to hit in Buffalo.

We don't have an MLB thread yet this year but I guess a division rival is Jays related. But Pablo Sandoval has lost his job as starting 3B. It took exactly one year for that contract to an albatross. Here's hoping Price goes the same route.

Wasn't Pompey sent down to the minor league camp mid-way through spring training? As in he didn't even make the normal spring training roster? That sounds to me like he won't be MLB ready any time soon if he can't even stay on the regular spring training roster.
I think people make too big a deal over the "closer" role. Storen and Osuna are the 8 / 9th inning guys. Does it really matter who pitches in which inning? Realistically, I view the 8th and the 9th almost the same, and which one is more difficult to pitch in will depend on what part of the order they face. If Storen faces 5,6,7, and then Osuna takes on 8,9,1 - which inning was more important? Anyway, long story short, I don't care who is deemed "closer", but I enjoy having both those guys at the back-end of the bullpen.

Not sure what you mean, being sent to MILB camp midway means he was at the normal (MLB) spring training camp. It doesn't mean that he won't be MLB ready anytime soon, it just means that he wasn't going to make the opening day roster (with Saunders Pillar and Bautista it was unlikely he'd get much playing time anyways short of a 60 day DL stint by one of them).
There is a good reason to send him down early... if he gets injured at the MLB camp then he'll be earning a big league salary while on the DL (small payroll issue) and more importantly accruing major league service time which will effect his arbitration and free agency eligibility down the road. You don't want to keep pre-arb players who don't figure to be on you're opening day roster in big league camp long.

Wow. I truly wish nothing but the worst to the Red Sox.

Giants dodged a bullet there. Much better off with Duffy.

Interesting - I guess I just equated his being sent down from the main spring training group as a sign that he was not performing well. And I'll be the first to say that I often overlook salary / contracts / options type stuff at first blush, but you raise another really good point about having him earn MLB time even if he's not playing.

Giants have done well in their drafting/developing recently.
Their entire infield is homegrown. All solid players as well
