You essentially need to be living in a house, preferably in the suburbs, where you can place it in an unobstructed spot. Just my experience.

We get all of like six channels in Calgary, I couldn't put a lot of faith in getting much of anything OTA in Victoria. This is from ten years ago.

Where in the world are you getting a Tivimate Premium lifetime subscription for $45?
EDIT: Nevermind; if you use a search engine, make sure you click on 'Tivimate.com' and not 'Tivmate.com' results; Tivmate.com is a scam.

How are the Roku streaming sticks?
Do they run a bit quicker or have better internet range than a 10 year old TV with built in wifi/apps?
Trying to decide if I should get rid of a TV or just buy a Roku stick. Thanks!

Personally I absolutely hate Roku. From the layout to the lag to the lack of mainstream apps and options. My suggestion: get a fire stick. Yes adds suck but with a launcher you get no adds and the ability to have real apps on your device.

No SN app on Roku, if that matters to you.

Apparently Roku is a bitch to develop for, explaining the lack of apps. It works well enough, but there are probably much better options.

Prefer Onn Streaming box (Walmart) over Firestick, but I think not available in Canada?
I use Projectivy launcher on it to eliminate all Google ads, etc and get nice, clean customizable interface. Regular one is $20, pro with Atmos and DD, etc is $50

They are georestricted now too. They still work in Canada, but you can't get new Canadian apps via the Play Store. Sideloading the APKs is possible but it's hard to find them and if you do they won't update.

Yeah, the last Onn box I picked up would not allow me to set it up as it saw I was in Canada. I was going to mess around with a VPN, but then I had a trip to the States so I activated it there. However once I was back in Canada I was able to install TSN, Sportsnet, and the Telus TV app. From what I read it's only on initial setup that it checks the location.

Is Canada the location for your google account?

I don't see anything that specifies my location. I do have my home address saved for Google Maps, but that's about it.

Well I'm no longer a Plex fan. They locked remote streaming behind their Plex Pass subscription, so I thought I'd finally look into the lifetime subscription as I remember it not being that expensive. But of course right before they made the remote streaming changes they massively increased the price of a lifetime subscription to $350. I don't think I'll be the only one to say screw that and start looking at other options instead
So I just finished setting up a Jellyfin server, an open-source alternative to Plex. So far it's pretty nice. You get "premium" features like hardware transcoding and offline downloads with no charge, and it's pretty easy to setup your own remote streaming access if you're comfortable with home networking. The only real downside so far is their TV and mobile apps are a little bare bones compared to Plex, but with the amount of new interest they're going to see with Plex driving users away I'm guessing it won't be long until the apps get closer to par

I tried Jellyfin a year or two ago and liked it, but Plex was still better, and I paid for lifetime many years ago. There's no way I'd pay $350 now considering how their business model has changed and has made home streaming an afterthought.
If they continue to go down the same route I'll switch to Jellyfin, but I'll keep using Plex for as long as possible.

I noticed this change as well. I bought a lifetime plex pass back when it was $49.99 on a promo from $99. My parents will be happy as they stream from my server 90% of the time and plex pass subscribers can host and stream to non subscribers without issue after the change.
