That's around the corner from my house...
We live across the street from an off leash park, so I wouldn't be surprised if I've seen the dog walk by my house a million times. The owner was likely walking down the sidewalk (not against the law) on their way to the dog park when he got away from her. I can understand the panic of the owner running away. She knows she's up poop creek and would likely have to turn her dog over.

Nenshi needs to impose a ban on dogs (and cats) in Calgary. It will be a much better place to live.

As someone who knows that girl from a past life I would say your comment would hit the nail right on the head.

Crazy to know that your pet or small child can be attacked or killed at the drop of hat. Nothing these people could have done to even protect them.

http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/small-dog-...eash-1.2340176

“I came around the corner from the building which is right by the tennis courts and this dog comes running from the parking lot, out of nowhere,” recalls Yautz. “I knew he was going after my dog so I grabbed my dog’s leash and pulled my dog up in the air.”

Yautz says the larger dog, which was on a leash but without an owner, lunged at Skippy and locked its jaws around the smaller dog’s belly.

The owner apologized profusely to Yautz and returned the large dog to the tennis courts where a woman and child (or children) took control of the animal.

The unidentified man drove Yautz and Skippy to an emergency veterinary clinic in his pickup truck and reassured Yautz that he would cover any costs.

“I put him on the vet’s table and the vet checked him with his stethoscope and said he’s dead,” recalls Yautz. ““I went out to talk to the guy and he was gone.”

The three-year-old girl bitten by a dog at an Edmonton playground is continuing to recover at home.

Maryam Abdelwahab required stitches to her lip and eye, and plastic surgery as a result of the attack Sunday in Mill Woods.

Last year in Edmonton 536 dog attacks were reported, 303 of those on people.

The city's animal control office said 29 people either received stitches or hospital treatment because of a dog attack in 2014.

Spoiler!

The dogs were quick and it wasn't until they were next to me, smelling my outstretched hand, that their owner yelled out asking if they I 'have a problem with dogs' or something to that effect. My answer to that would typically be 'no' but at that point it didn't much matter.

It also wasn't until that point that I saw they were unmuzzled pit bulls. The owner confirmed the same when I asked him what breed the dogs were. These are dogs I try to avoid. The owner seemed like a nice enough guy and the dogs were gentle with me and went on their way. But this is a perfect example of the seemingly inconsequential careless dog ownership that needs to be nipped in the bud. The dogs were not legally off-leash. It was late at night. If I had been startled or moved suddenly who knows what would have happened. Very irresponsible owner behaviour that leads to the kind of unnecessary attacks we read about.
Not being panicked, standing still is how you likely avoided a chase. When we are at an off leash park my dog loves chasing running dogs. What makes me upset is when a family without a dog brings their skittish kids to a dog park and then the kids run around and my dog wants to play "chase . I've had to educate a lot of people at the parks that if you stand up straight and don't run away my dog will have no interest in you. That and take your kids to a playground not a dog park..

Funny how I got attacked 4 times last year and the apologists were livid claiming it was my fault. I hate stupid dog owners almost as much as the dogs that like to attack me. Next time I get bit in the back of the arm by a dog that I never knew existed I'll remember to think about how it's my fault. Maybe I should have stood up straighter, yeah that was totally on me.

Personally I've never been attacked by a dog but I find the people who do are scared of them, If a dog bites you from behind the thing should be put down IMO, what if it's a 3 year old getting attacked or something?

Dogs always try to be my friend for some reason, my daughters french bulldog acts like a friken cat to me but I can't stand the stinky creatures.

If a dog bites you it is completely owners fault. That's insane to think otherwise. My point was that at an off leash dog park people shouldn't be bringing young kids and treating it like a playground and then give me a dirty look when my dog runs over to them for a sniff/lick/pet. If your dog has agressive tendencies or has ever bit anyone, they should not be allowed at dog parks, or off leash ever. That's so irresponsible.

Personally, I don't think it matters if it is an off leash park or not. A dog should be trained to not approach other people unless invited to and it definitely shouldn't be off leash anywhere if it isn't trained to return to it's owner on command.

Off leash doesn't mean free for all. The enjoyment and safety for humans using the park (including children) is still the top priority.

There's something just unintentionally funny about this quote.

Never ceases to amaze me how many dog owners in off leash area's just think its totally ok to have their dogs run at or approach people and somehow think that its the other persons fault.

Part of the bylaw states "Dogs must be under their owner's control at all times. In off-leash areas, this means dogs must be able to respond to their owner's voice, sound or visual commands. This will help protect your dog from unforeseen hazards such as cars, unfriendly dogs or coyotes."

If your dog is running towards another person or child, you have to be verbally able to control it and stop it approaching. If you can't demonstrate that level of control, then your dog has no business being in a off leash area.

Yup, and when we take our kids to a playground we shouldn't have to expect some stupid dog owner letting their mutt off leash so they can jump all over the kids. And then the dog owner thinks it's fine because "he likes kids, he's just being friendly!". Screw you, dog owner, and your mangy mess of fur and diseases.

Either way, people should not be treating an off leash area as a play area for their kids. Sending your kid to play in an off leash area and then complaining that dogs are running up to them is the same as putting them in the road and complaining about the cars almost hitting them.

Yeah I agree with you. Maybe in a perfect world dogs would be so well trained that they'd come back to their owner with a verbal command, but I'd be surprised if 1% of dogs in Calgary could do that 100% of the time. Taking your kids to a dog park seems nuts. It'd be like taking them into a zoo animal's cage.
