I am an expert, so I turned it off, turned it on again and it worked for about 2 seconds, then went dark and the light remained.

I was just about out of ideas after the whole "turn on/turn off" exercise, but then I decided to cut the power and restart the whole works but no dice. There is nothing. Blank screen*. I even jiggled the wires and made sure all the connections were connected just in case some gremlins came in and pulled them out a little while I was gone.

Anyone got any ideas as to what happened to this damned thing?

*yeah, it's a blank screen, so if there are any spelling errors in this post, blame it on the computer. I'm flying blind here, moving my mouse and clicking by memory/luck so spelling is the least of my worries. I just hope I navigated to the right board and clicked in the appropriate place. Mods, if I posted this on the wrong board please move.
Is it an actually black screen, ie: the same color as the LCD when it is off, or is it a little bright, like shimmering grey?

There's no reason for onboard sound "not to cut it". It's not a performance issue that buying a new, separate sound card would fix. Stuttering sound may be any number of other issues, either being the game is buggy or the wrong audio settings are used...or your computer isn't setup properly and thus slow when getting into high action areas. Onboard sound should not be the culprit here.

Hmm. I'll keep looking into it then. Must be the game or something. Nothing else slows down at all. Sorry to keep bugging, but what would be the advantage of buying a sound card then? I'm only a running 2.1 setup and I am not really an audiophile. Something not to bother with?

The onboard decoding chips used to be craptastic and a drain on resources. Now they are much better and with so much more processing power and memory available, onboard is fine for 95% of people. You may still want a soundcard if you are a real audiophile, or really want to hear the EAX effects (a proprietary Creative Labs thing), but normally it isn't needed.

Do you usually get a message or blue screen when there is no connection to the monitor instead of all black. If you do try pulling the cord from your monitor that is connected to your computer.

Another thing you can do is to try it on a different computer or try a different monitor on the same computer. Also try a different cord or check its connections that go from the computer to the monitor. Maybe the cord's connections are off or its broken somehwere in between. Just some things to try to isolate the problem.
I really don't know about a message or a blue screen when it's not connected.

I do have another monitor connected to it now and it works just fine. It weighs about 50 pounds though and takes up half my desk and that ain't good.

All the cords and that physical stuff was hunky dory.

Hack&Lube -- it's black like it is turned off. No action at all.

quick question ...

a few weeks back I asked about downloading a torrent and then a windows failure shortly there after (hall.dll)

I did a XP restore and all was fine, but now I've had two other corruptions nuke my PC and now it's not so easy to fix.

Thoughts?

Hard drive failure?
Will a complete XP reinstall fix it?

Thanks

Yeah it sounds like it could be a flaky hard drive, though usually that shows up when you boot (most newer computers have a system that monitors the health of a hard drive).

Checking the hard drive would be a good step, most manufacturers have software on their sites now that you can download, burn to CD, and boot from and test and format the hard drive, that's what I would probably do at this point. That kind of corruption isn't normal.

I'll throw out the standard "What are you going to use it for?" question, before we get sucked into the world of Mac vs PC arguments. For which there is no end or right answer here on CP.

And what are the screen sizes?

If you are set on one or the other then Id go with the Dell.

But it really depends on what you are looking for and what your budget is. There are so many more options out there. Education discounts are rarely a good "deal".

It has to be either Dell or Apple...only two options with my work. The discounts are pretty damn good in Nunavut!

I'm shocked people still even consider buying PC's.

Did you know Mac's can run windows? That fact should really wipe any doubt from anyones mind...

Honestly above all else what I love about macs is they dont have a fan underneath them...it doesnt overheat by simply sitting on your lap or what have you.

Here's a cost comparison:

Hey

The Dell your thinking about is absolutely fantastic. FYI, the screen is 13.3" (hence the 1330). I have the year old predecessor, the XPS m1210 (12.1' screen) and I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE my laptop.

Very small, but extremely powerful, and lightweight. Works incredibly well doing everything...but two little things to watch out for. I have an extended 9cell battery (which I totally recommend) but it does get a lil' hot from time to time. Nothing too bad though....and occasionally there is a bit of a whine from the computer when it has been on a long time (think its the fan).

But really a great piece of work...had I waited 6 months I could have gotten the new one but I am happy with this one for sure =)

Vista has been getting clobbered pretty good for it's piece-of-crapishness. I think there was a thread about it.

I'm not a computer nerd but I do have a Dell at home and a Dell at work -- if I was in your spot I'd buy the Mac. I'd try to avoid the "cult" part of being a Mac owner, just so people don't choke me.
