Also being away from their families and living in a college dorm for three weeks can't be that appealing either.
Now if Favres case this should be a whole different story. He is going to a new team with a new system. One would think that it would be to his benefit to come to all the off season workouts and training camp to properly prepare for the upcoming season. How cocky must one be to think that they can show up half way through the preseason in the toughest position in the sport on a new team with a new system and excel? Or is it all just about having a little bit of fun for good ole' Brett Favre? That really isn't fair to his teammates.

In Brett's defense (I can't believe I'm saying this) the Vikings nomenclature and offense they use is the same one he knew in GB. He doesn't need to learn very much new stuff.
But he does need to get a rhythm with his receivers and his line.

I remember listening to some sports talk radio show after the second season of Hard Knocks had aired on HBO. It had scenes of Dave Campo in the Dallas Cowboys Head Coaches office. The broadcaster was just disgusted that someone like Dave Campo was allowed to sit in the same office as Tom Landry, Jimmy Johnson, and even Barry Switzer.
Its interesting with an owner like Jerry Jones. The Cowboys would never have won the Super Bowl three times in the 90's without him as an owner. Now the Cowboys will never win a Super Bowl with him as an owner. Its good to have an owner that cares, but he needs to hire the right people and let them do their job.

I'll agree with that.
And I think Jones just cares too much. He needs a coach/GM able to stand up to him and let them do their jobs.

But...but...the winner of '4th and Long' is going to get the Cowboys over the top this year!

I'm sure he would be expected to be the team leader as well. What kind of example does it set for the rest of the team when their leader shows up in a helicopter half way through the preseason?

Its probably tough for guys like Jones who are obviously very passionate. They probably take to owning a football team the same way they do things in their other business dealings. I always hear that to be successful in business you need to be hands on. For some reason that doesn't seem to work in professional sports. Although I think the owners that don't get involved can be just as detrimental. Look at the KC Chiefs floundering about for 40 years and counting.

I think they need to be involved and know what is going on, as well as who needs to be held accountable. But they need to stick to when they know. I'm sure Jones knows more about football than I ever will, but I'm also sure everyone in the NFL coaching GM ranks probably got there on merit and know more than Jerry ever will know. Jones needs to be like Robert Kraft; Kraft knows marketing and promotion so that is where he spends his energy. Jones is a wheeler and dealer, perhaps he should only step in for contract negotiations. Work with your strengths and let others work to theirs.

Looks like the Chiefs have finally signed Matt Cassel to a multi year contract.
Let the winning begin.

and yes, this is by far the worst time of the year for sports for me. I try to get some sporadic listening in on ESPN radio during my day and I just want to puke with all of the baseball talk. I really hate Major League Baseball. I think the fact that it dominates American sports for 8 months of the year has contributed to that. When I was a kid, I ate it up.
Can't wait for training camp...both NFL and NHL. Then life can begin again.

The CFL used to really kill the time for me, but I just can't do it anymore. I tried watching the first two Stamps games this year and turned them both off. Just brutal football.

That's a massive contract for 16 games in 7 years. Good for Cassel.

Well, he was guarantees 1/2 that much for ONE year, so 28 spread over 6 years was probably the only way Pioli could get him to sign and spread the cap hit out.

My thought was to not make the trade at all. I wouldn't argue that once they went that route they had to look for something long term and hope he pans out.

Couldn't agree with you more! These two are the best leagues by far! CFL blows and isn't even 5% as exciting as the NFL and MLB is meh(when playoffs start I watch a little more but not as exciting at all as NFL and NHL). With those two being the only two on right now, I have to watch NFL Network and TSN for NFL/NHL updates (as well as going on hockey forums online)!

True, but once it was done a new long term contract HAD to be done, and you knew it wouldn't be for less guaranteed money.
Pioli bailed out the Pats big time. Of course, the Pats would have used the Cassel contract and huge one year cap hit as an excuse to purge a bunch of contracts then have a boatload of cash to rebuild with all the draft picks they have amassed.

Evidently, Antonio Cromartie is the new Travis Henry. No, he's not a drug dealer.
