if I recall correctly they couldnt interfere with any aviation equipment whatsoever with their cell phones. It annoys me everytime I fly because you can't even use an iPod until the seatbelt light turns off, and usually on a trip to Vancouver that damn thing is lit up the whole time.
you are correct on the MB thing.
I think you are off on the ipod though. It is just during takeoff and landing, not necessarily when the seatbelt is lit. It is a safety thing so if there is an emergency you can hear the instructions and not be rocking out with your earphones in.
That's absolutely ######ed. It's not using any airtime. I call BS on that.
Maybe because it still has to communicate to the phone to ring it and the way the systems are setup it uses up network resources on the roaming network to do the voicemail? I'm just speculating, but I've been told the exact same thing by Fido a few times, and I wasn't being reimbursed to actually try it.

Call yourself and let us know if they tell you different. That's what I was told. The agent did say that if your phone is on and voicemail is left, you pay.
With so many GSM phones out there the TDMA chirping can be heard on the radios. I've forgotten to turn my phone off a few times when I was operating a radar system a few times. But generally.. no problems.
This has nothing to do with iphones, but.....
I know nothing about the Mythbusters and there exhaustive research on this, but generally you are right, and there are rarely issues. The problem is that certain cell frequencies and certain ILS freq's, and possibly certain harmonics of those freq's, that under rare conditions can cause some distortion. It does not happen often or regularly, but imagine the next time you are landing in minimum weather the possible degradation of the signal that a phone may be causing.
We had a situation that we suspected possible cell interference which resulted in a few go-arounds to a certain runway at a certain airport. I don't believe it was ever able to be eliminated as the cause.
Hopefully some day it can be proven that it causes no problems, or those theoretical risks can be sufficiently mitigated, but the rules are there for a reason.
And yes, you can use your Ipod as soon as the FA's start talking after takeoff until 10 minutes prior to landing when they are securing the cabin.
And just to keep it iphone related, I am looking forward to getting mine in a few weeks.

I honestly hope this myth continues. People are annoying enough on planes without their phones.

I was told the same thing.
Canada or the US, the incoming call counts. I asked because under Bell I was charged this, and was hoping it was different.
You can buy a set of minutes for the US. I usually do when i head south. I may not use them all, but I can use my phone knowing exactly what the costs are.
On the airline front, air canada will provide wifi soon. Some airlines in europe allow you to make calls and text I think. The airlines will control it to make a buck but it'll happen.

Nope ...not on air canada at least. I had a talk with the flight attendant about it. All electronic devices are to be turned off while the seatbelt sign is lit and can only be used when it is not, while anything that sends or receives a signal cannot be used at anytime. They don't even give you the opportunity to play dumb as they mention it 3 or 4 times! During my flight the light never came off. I asked halfway through if I could use my ipod and I was told that I couldn't do it.

You've certainly been making up for the lost time though. I'm amazed someone hasn't slapped your device from your hand mid-tweet.

One major reason is that with so many different brands of cell phones the frequency bands used and the possible harmonics generated (or rather, not filtered out) cannot be accurately predicted from phone to phone, so the catch all is to just say, don't use them. But really.. you get no signal at 35,000ft, and that just uses more of the battery, so turn it off!
But what kind of pilot are you if you can't do an approach without the ILS. I mean COME ON!

lol, ya this has definitely been a wired vacation. My brother was supposed to join me instead of my wife and last minute he wasn't able to go, so it's just me and my parents. Still very cool, but the # of things to do sort of dropped through the floor leaving me with plenty of time to ... well ... do this. The funny thing about being on a vacation in a condo with older people is they dont seem to want to go out for dinner, they always want to stay in.
A little more back on topic, I've discovered Air Canada has really ramped up their in-flight entertainment. Tons of video on demand stuff which pretty much made my ipod/laptop unnecessary (except of course for when it broke).
Tethering on Fido has been very impressive so far (I'm on it now). Haven't had any problems whatsoever although the tweaks from the Firefox tweak thread don't play nice with bluetooth tethering, I'm guessing too many connections.
Bluetooth tethering appears to be MUCH easier on the battery than the adHoc WIFI tethering that PDANet used.
Had one Safari crash during a copy & paste but it's been fine otherwise. Seems very stable so far for a beta 2.
Voice memo is meh: the new Evernote is much better IMO.
All the new stuff works exactly like you'd expect. Photo slideshows seem like they've always been there; copy & pasting is simple, the universal search is simple. MMS is weird though; you appear to have to copy from your photos then paste into a text message for it to work, though I might be doing it wrong.
ETA: Safari now has "open in new tab", finally
