I'm sure the 49'ers thought the same thing too before they ended up 6-11 and as the last place team in their Division.

And one year later here they are, despite again being crippled, lurking as Super Bowl contenders. So it won't be 45 years of darkness incoming, you'll be alright.

Lifetime In Suspension

The chiefs have played in 5 of the last 6 Super Bowl and won 3 of those. I can see why we'd think they'll turn into bottom feeders overnight. This ain't exactly the NY Jets we're talking about. A generation of sadness begins now!

They lost to the Eagles by 3, Chargers by 6, Jags by 3, Bills by 7, and Broncos by 3.
They could easily be 8-2 just soon as they are 5-5.
Still top 10 in yards (7th) and points per game (9th) on offense, and top 10 in Yards per game (7th) and points per game (4th) on defense.
And I'd say they haven't had the easiest schedule with all 5 losses coming to playoff teams and by 1 score or less.
If they go on a run and get in the playoffs I wouldn't want to play them. If they went 6-1 to end the season here I wouldn't be shocked either.

They're contending for the playoffs, but are not a Superbowl threat.
The Chiefs won't fall into an immediate strong of 3-13 seasons, but gradually will fade to occasional playoff team to bad team. But by the CP standard...if you're not at least making the championship round...your franchise is irrelevant. That was the Chiefs from 1970 to 2018.

There is ample evidence that they are on the decline. Seven years ago Hunt leading the team in rushing and Kelce leading the team in receiving was the envy of the league. Those two players leading the team in stats today is not ideal at all. You kind of feel it's been the defense that has held things together for them the past few seasons and their luck in one score games wouldn't last forever. The generous officiating they receive is typically reserved for game changing moments but they have to still put themselves in position to benefit from the close calls that go their way and they haven't been as magical offensively as they used to be.
I'm not saying the 45 years of darkness is on the horizon but it does look like things are getting a little stale and Reid who's one of the greatest offensive play callers in history IMO probably even getting a little long on the tooth and closer to retirement. Once he steps away things could go south even with Mahomes. Spagnuolo is no spring chicken himself so in a few years who knows what happens with this organization.

Obligatory "The Patriots went 10 years between Super Bowls in their dynasty" post. Really the Bills game is the only one the Chiefs have looked truly bad this year, otherwise, as SuperMatt points out they aren't playing that poorly. I think they are playing better this year at 5-5 than they were last year when they were 9-1 at the same point in time. But this year they are reverting to the mean in one score games and thats the big difference in their record. And I still don't think there are more than two great teams in the NFL right now, the Eagles and Rams, who conveniently don't play in the AFC. So if they get things cleaned up down the stretch they'll be fine. They've just removed their margin for error pretty much.

The rushing game is a worry but TBH that's the only real worry.
The receiving core will figure it out eventually and with Kelce, Brown, Rice, Worthy, Thornton and Juju they will have enough talent.

One game suspension for Ja'Marr Chase after spitting on Jalen Ramsey.
Consistent with other cases (like Jalen Carter), but would have loved for the clown to get an extra game. Spitting on an opponent is garbage behavior either way, but he had a chance to take responsibility after the game in the face of compelling video evidence. Instead, he lied. Clown.

The Kansas City Chiefs played a total of 23 playoff games between 1970 and 2018, winning 10 of those games.

Where did you get that from? Based on my count I have them as 5-17 in that time. Starts with a loss in the double OT game that they lost to the Dolphins in 71, and no appearances until the 86 season, than nothing until 1990 for playoff games. First win in 1991, 2 more in 93, than nothing till 2015 and than another win in 2018. In that 47 season stretch they had 17 playoff appearances which would rank a bit about statistical averages as there was 10 playoff teams until 1989 and 12 from 1990 onward until 2020 when two more were added. League ranged between 26 and 32 teams with 28 from 76 until 94 when the Jags and Panthers were added, and the subsequent addition of the new Browns in 99 and Texans in 2002.

B-B-But in his press Conference didn't he claim "I ain't spit on nobody."
He's a fantastic talent, but a complete twat.

AI query.
Here is a table:
https://www.pro-football-reference.c...n/playoffs.htm
Stupid AI! Should have double-checked.
Chat GPT has it: The Kansas City Chiefs’ playoff record from the 1970 season through 2018 is 5 wins and 17 losses.

I love Petey Carroll getting destroyed week after week. So much better than cheering for a team to win the Super Bowl.

If they make the playoffs they're a super bowl threat.
Particularly since making the playoffs likely means they're coming into said playoffs on a 6-1 or 7-0 streak...
