#1 Goaltender
|
Heading into the playoffs the Oilers appeared to have regressed in every position except Draisaitl compared to last year. They never addressed their goaltending, they lost their number 1 D, their special teams were a mess, they were scoring less across the line up (excluding 29), and their underlying stats were down in every area compared to last year.
I assumed if they couldn't get it done last year, they didn't improve enough, or at all, to get it done this year.
Then they got outclassed by LA in the first two games, looked like a quick first round exist, and all was well in the universe. I figured this all lined up with the downgrades they made to their team, their play after the 4 nations break, and how they limped into the playoffs. Life was good, I wasn't worried one bit.
Then they went on a 10-2 heater and currently look unstoppable. I'm now worried.

Seems like the only team that knows how to beat them are the Panthers. Our only hope now lies with Chucky, Bennett, and the gang. Please don’t let us down, Florida!

I know it's looking gloomy but the series is only 2-1. Lots can happen still. I'm still really disappointed in Hellebyuck, Winnipeg should be here,
What's with these "grade A" American goalies seemingly choking?

Guys, do I start cheering for the Oilers? Without fail, whatever team I cheer for loses. I'm prepared to take one for the team if it means the Oilers take the L.

There are likely other teams who play a style that beats theirs more effectively but that they don't see in the playoffs.
Unfortunately its a pretty small pool of the same old teams they come up against.
Vegas was one but have taken a step back since their cup win.
I think Colorado and Toronto would be two teams that would be a good bet to oust them in 7 games.

Toronto no. Colorado yes. It comes back to having that #1C that’s truly elite.
McDavid vs Hintz is a complete mismatch. Barkov vs Aho is a complete mismatch.
Mcdavid vs Matthews seems like an even matchup until you see what Matthews does in the playoffs.
McDavid vs MacKinnon is an even saw off with MacKinnon being the bigger guy who can muck it up. The same thing with Barkov. He has a great stick and the puck stays on his stick and he can play along the boards.
Dallas is supposed to win the battle of depth but Duchene and Benn are awful and honestly should be demoted to the 4th line.

Stolarz >> Skinner
I've generally liked the way the Leafs have played the oil in recent years. They don't play intimidated but with swagger. Trade blows instead of just folding.
That said, yes playoff leafs are something else, at least in games 4-7.
We really needed the Avs to come out of thar first round series. They had the lead too..

I just want to thank all the flames fans for stepping up and calling out that reprehensible comment about Joey Moss. He was hired back in the eighties, his sister was dating Gretzky. He was an integral part of the oilers and eskimos franchises for decades. He did an important locker room job but was part of the fabric and culture of the teams.
By all accounts he was loved by all players for his work ethic and positive attitude. He was an example for families and those with disabilities of the possibilities and spurred on some incredible charitable enterprises in the city. He is an icon, and was never exploited, only celebrated and loved.
Slag the team and franchise all you want but Joey Moss and the teams work with him is one of the things that shouldn’t be brought into the mud slinging.
Again thanks to the fans who stood up here, this is an issue very close to home to me.

You can't sweep grease, everyone knows that.
You need an industrial solvent or Kitty litter.

The only one good thing about the Oilers in the entire history of the organization was Joey. The rest; complete rubbish.

Yeah, the way they treated Joey Moss was nothing but top notch. Why is he being dragged into this?
You can hate a lot of things about the Oilers but Joey Moss? That seems more than a bit of a reach.

No kidding. If LA had won that game it would have absolutely crushed the Oilers' spirits and that series is probably over in 5. Instead here we are in the darkest timeline.
Thanks Kings, ya f'n losers.

Because Wbite Out 403 made a completely classless comment, and then edited his post to remove it "because it upset a few posters"

I like the extremes WO403 goes when calling out the Oilers. The funny part is they usually are completely earned too.
He almost had a perfect post, but took it one step too far.
Ben and Joey were great stories that transcend rivalry.

For some reason I thought he was talking about McTavish and Moss didn’t cross my mind.
I was wondering why people would defend McTavish.

Dallas on paper has what appears to be maybe the deepest roster in the NHL save for the Panthers. The difference is that the Panthers have gamers that save their best for the playoffs which is a complete 180 to the Stars who have players that excel in the regular season but fold in the playoffs when the going gets tough. The only reason they even got out of the first round is because of a player they brought in at the deadline that went god mode but even Rantanen's starting to get caught up in the playoff suck of that team. Series is 2-1 going on 4-1 as the Stars won't win another game.
