But again, as always, the argument seems to be “+30 isn’t so bad as long as you have shelter and hydration and shade! -30 is terrible because you have no choice but to be naked outside!”
It’s just not an even relatively meaningful comparison.
lol you missed the part where I thanked sliver's reply about winter clothing factoring in
the person I know who passed away was also wearing a winter jacket and gloves, so while the argument counts it doesn't dismiss the possibility of cold enough conditions being lethal..

I'm curious to see how next winter is too. Apparently we're about to come off a rare three-year La Niña cycle (ending in Spring 2023) which is helping to explain the abundant cold air and snow this season. Feels like we've been blasted with extremely cold temperatures way more than usual since November.
We're in the last few months of the three year La Nina. Our weather has been wet and cold and where this thread originates has been fantastic.
After the La Nina clears we should go back to averages and the post rate in this thread will climb off lows.
Yeah or for another example, I'd take 5 degrees over 35 degrees if it was for a prolonged period of time, as I literally can't do anything in 35. Golf, running, sitting outside on a patio etc, it's all out.

Wait what? You are the one who literally posted the actual occurrences showing they don’t happen at anywhere near the same frequency thus supporting my point how bad of a comparison it is. But somehow you think it’s a good one?
Yup, that was me responding to Cliff showing that we generally get a lot more +30 days than -30 days. However, it also shows that we don't get a lot of +30 days either. The point is that they aren't even, but they're also attainable in Calgary so I can understand why people compare them. They're nice opposite ends of the freezing point for this city.
My personal happy range to be outdoors is -10 to +20. *shrug*

Wait so you would rather sit out on a patio in 5 degree weather.
How much effort is needed to hang out drink beer in the heat?
Running, yeah that's a tough one in 35, but it is just quality training.

I know CP skews high in wealthy earners so this may come as a shock, but most people actually don't have central AC.
So continous 35 is certainly not just about outdoor activity, it's actually trying to live and sleep at home that becomes excruciating. That's very high on the list of 5 degrees vs 35 degrees pros and cons for an extended period.
Add not sleeping well and boiling during the day inside to not golfing, running or doing much of anything and yeah I'll take 5 degrees over 35 for sure.

So true. And this is going to sound very spoiled, but even AC isn't that pleasant compared to just a nice outside ambient temperature. Something about it just feels artificial and weird.

I'd argue +30 and - 30 can be a legit comparison because it's basically the hottest weather vs the coldest weather Calgary normally gets. If given a preference of one over the other, I guess some may prefer coldest, but I'd be willing to bet anything that the vast majority of people would prefer hottest.
Personally I view the range to be -20C and +30C. They're both the relatively regular cusps IMO that most people start feeling uncomfortable. Upper range you need sun screen, lower range you need quality long outerwear.
-30C for a week in Calgary seems like the same suffering someone in Kelowna gets at 40C for a week.
-40C for a few days in Calgary is like those "we gonna die" days when a US city hits 50C for a few days.

I don’t have AC cuz I don’t like being cold.

Yeah, but you're crazy based on your posting history on weather. If you're comfortable in a house with no AC at 35 degrees (which usually means 28 or more at night) than I don't even know what to say. In real life I've literally never met anyone like you.
Anyone like that probably took steps to live down south as soon as they could afford it.
Looks like one of the baggage kids here at YYC is going to lose a couple of fingertips, they're ill-equipped to be out here for 14 hours... several have frostbite.
Majority of flights are cancelled... if you were planning to travel to see family for the holiday, you now aren't.

But this is better than +30.
What Airline are you talking about?? Westjet? I see some flights are cancelled but not the majority. Why are you scaring the heck out of people that they won't be able to see their families???

I'm looking at the screen right now and greater than half, i.e. the majority, of inbounds are cancelled thru about 0830. We can see what's cancelled before whatever public site you're looking at shows anything, even though in this case yyc.com is also showing exactly what I just said.
