Statement from Nenshi today:
Quote:
"I am confident that a new project that has public benefit for public money exists, and I know both sides are working very hard on that. The owners of the Calgary Flames have repeatedly assured Calgarians that they would not threaten to move the team, and I assume that they have not shifted from that position. I plan to enjoy the playoff run while letting the conversations continue!"

There are quite a few people like me that do stuff like that coming from Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, etc... so there definitely is new money coming into the city of Calgary due to the Flames.

We make it in several times a year and spend at hotels, restaurants etc as well.

In related entertainment news, Wine-ohs (a downtown music venue) is closing its doors this weekend. They just can't make a go of it in this economy.
A good show there definitely brought money into the area. Local restaurants, cabs, and the staff at the club all relied on it. Perhaps the taxpayers should have kicked in to pay their rent?

I think the problem there is that place was pretty terribly run. Ken King is bad, but he wouldn't take 40 minutes to get me drinks and then 30 more for some store bought Hummus.
Even with free rent that place would have gone under

Ha. Fair point.
But, with the cooperation of the city, I'm sure they could have made improvements to both the service and food. It is in a pretty old building!

Not to mention there are dozens of other venues who host live music. Including an NHL sized arena. (though it is woefully inadequate for a lot of the bigger acts)

Truth is that Katz didnt even shell out 20 million of his own dough when everything settled.

He must be one helluva a negotiator then. I thought I remember him contributing at least $100M. Either way, that full page ad that he took out to apologize to the people of Edmonton had to have been one big pill to swallow. I'm sure both sides can figure out a fair deal that both sides can stomach.
There was a lot to learn from how the Rogers Place situation went down. The current CalgaryNext project will never happen though imo, the sheer costs associated with the creosote clean up coupled with the ambitiousness of the actual facility itself pretty much guarantees it'll never happen.
A new arena itself is probably palatable from both sides, but I doubt a brand new stadium will ever be given the green light unless the city and province receive a big cheque from the federal government (Olympics). Even then, I'm still skeptical.

Ken King left the Sun to become the publisher of the Calgary Herald. Maybe that should give him an even lower opinion of people's intelligence.

Katz's cash contribution was around 25 million.
The other amounts attributed to him as contributions come in the form of yearly lease, or something.

I would argue that the 500 is taken on a 3 hour road trip to continue enjoying the style of entertainment you previously did.
And I am well aware of the costs but this is only a city problem. It's either leave some of the most prime real estate in the city vacant forever or do something about it. As for Bow and Crowchild... something already needs to be done about that area (Crowchild) so another city issue that needs to be addressed regardless of CalgaryNEXT.

Not true. Think of the converse argument - the need for properly placed arenas, otherwise people struggle to support them. Arenas placed outside the major market metropolis struggle immensely. Especially when games start at around 7:00pm. The fact is you spend your money where its convenient. As a realtor, you should understand the basic concept of location (... location, location). So why suggest you would spend all this extra disposable income at a highly inconvenient location? C'mon.

Rogers Place is being built for $483.5 million, including underground parking.
The Katz Group is paying $132.5-million. $112.8-million of their contribution will be paid to the City as rent over 35 years, and cover the City’s principal and interest costs.
The remaining $19.7-million will be paid as cash.
The City of Edmonton’s contribution of $226-million to the arena building includes funding through a Community Revitalization Levy, new parking revenues, and redirecting the current Rexall Place subsidy.
$125-million will be collected through a ticket surcharge.
