Lets hope the site location is closer to East Village. There's tons of land there, way better traffic and c train access, and no remediation costs. Ticks way more boxes than West Village, so not sure why Ken King was so adamant to have it in the west.
I suspect West Village is going to sit as is for another 50 years to be honest. No developer is going to touch that land with such a a massive clean up bill.
|
I think they were insistent on the West Village because there were no CRL funds available for area redevelopment in the East Village

I should add that I doubt he would be so Machiavellian.

Now there's an interesting theory, the ol' bait and switch play. Plan B will come out shortly with full, fancy renderings, and a significantly lower price tag. People pissed off about CalgaryNEXT warms up to the idea and are willing to pitch public dollars towards it.

Even funnier is this tweet sent out by CalgaryNEXT's twitter account yesterday:
Calgary Next
@CalgaryNext
If #CalgaryNEXT broke ground today, we’d still be 3-4 years away from completion. Let’s get started! #yyc #Flames #nhl #calstampeders

Well, $475 million for a proper arena (figure same as Rogers Arena), and $275-300 million (figure a bigger city version of Investors Group Stadium at ~$210m) for a partially covered 30-40k football/soccer stadium without the fieldhouse gimmick starts to look a lot better after proposing a $900 million super facility on contaminated lands with another $900 million in hidden costs.
It also happens to serve the purpose of killing West Village for a while since many of those costs occur regardless.

For anyone who thinks the flames proposal had an acceptable level of detail should read the city report. That is what a DBM level proposal should look like.

If it took 8 years for King to propose plan A, how long will it take to make a plan B?

Only an arena it is then. King getting fired seems likely, but he's been horrible until now and kept his job, so I could see him surviving yet again to pitch "Calgary arena project".

I would be absolutely shocked if the Flames had the gall to ask for the ticket tax loan from the city at 0%, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Ken King needs to be fired.
Not for anything specific items on the proposal, but for being so obviously misleading about items not in the proposal and vague about how much public funding would be required. Does he honestly think we're idiots. Christ, if you want public money, just come out and freaking say it and how much and let us have a civic discussion on the issue. Don't think you're smarter than us by doing a crappy job trying to bury that obvious fact under terms like CRL, ticket tax (if interest free), field house "savings", ignoring the obviously needed infrastructure upgrades, etc.
We're a city full of people who spend billions of capital on facilities and build them in this province with all sorts of financing schemes. We're not idiots.
Like ****. Seriously. **** off and give us straight talk. Actually no, **** off and find someone else to give us straight talk.

It took long enough for everyone to get back on the fire KK train. Guy sucks at every job he has done so far. I hope there is a plan B because this is pretty bad..

I would rather the city build the Green line twice than build this monstrosity. Just build two train lines, one elevated over the other.
$1.8 billion, that's just ridiculous.

I wonder if the Flames are going to relocate? That's usually the playbook for sports franchise owners. The league can't have cities growing stones all of a sudden and ruining the gravy train for all owners.
I could see it.

One good thing about that report is that the clean-up costs are much lower than the $300+ million that others had estimated. That timeline for the cleanup, though, really makes CalgaryNext unviable.
I went to a STH Q&A in 2011 (before the Flames bought the Stamps) where King said the new arena would be "a couple of blocks north of here" ("here" being the Saddledome). Let's dust off those plans and get going.
For selfish reasons, I've always been in favour of a Victoria Park location.

If they choose to play this card (bahahah ya right) and they leave, I would be proud to be from a city that stood up to them.
I love the Flames, but if it comes down to that we need to realize our priorities.

Not only did he present a long delayed project, he presented a half-assed and misleading project in an attempt to take advantage of the City.
Above all else, the City had to spend a few hundred thousand just to produce a study showing how flawed the proposal is...thanks for wasting everyone's time and money
