I don't think so. Before the cap was a horrible time for smaller teams. It was as bad as the puck over glass only resulting in a face-off...and if anyone wants to bring that back they've forgotten how truly painful it was to watch.
The crowd sure got lots of souvenirs though haha

I have been very consistent in what I have been saying. Keep our picks, not pick deficits at the draft. Don't throw picks at problems right now, this team isn't going to compete for a cup.
Our drafting record shows they can find players, that is the way out of this. Maybe we find out #1C at #17 overall, but if we start trading picks for middling players that chance lessens.

Well that is (not surprisingly) exactly what Conroy is doing.

Yeah he should be on the team but we have to make sure Kevin Rooney gets minutes for some reason.
Also Pelletier had 11 5v5 points in 24 games which was quite good, and while Frost and Farabee have higher upside the adjustment time for them hurt a bit

Can you imagine a FLA line of Tkachuck - Bennett - Marchand?
Rumour is Marchand to FLA.

Fair but if you are going by 3s then you'd put Vasilevsky over Hedman. Heiskenan is being outpointed per game by Harley. On Winnipeg I'm probably going Hellebuyck and Connor as the top two and then it's close between Morrisey (13OA) and Scheifele (7OA).

Winnipeg - Connor (17th overall), Morrisey (13th overall) and Hellebuyck (150th overall)
Washington - Ovechkin (1st overall), Strome (4th overall) and Thompson (undrafted)
Dallas (before today) - Robertson (39th overall), Johnston (23rd overall), Hintz maybe (49th overall)
Tampa - Kucherov (58th overall), Hagel (159th overall), Point (79th overall)
Vegas - Stone (178th overall), Eichel (2nd overall), Theodore (26th overall)
Florida - Barkov (3rd overall), Tkachuk (6th overall), Reinhart (2nd overall).
The only team that seems to follow this "you can only get good players at the top of the draft" appears to be Florida.
|
You ignored the point that non top picks historically take a lot longer to develop. So assume the 4 1sts in the next 2 years turn into 2 core starish players , and assume one of the players in the current pipeline turns out
That’s still 4/5 years from now .
That’s why I have a real problem seeing how this teams wants to get elite . Wait for 5 years “competing” for the 8th spot and hope a late first turns out - when more often then not they don’t .
It’s also convient you left out Colorado , Hedman, Hesiikanen , and edmontons players trying to “prove” your point
No confirmation bias there at all !

Asset management failure.

I agree that I think this was poor asset management today. If the flames win a couple rounds in the playoffs (dare to dream lol) or some vets are traded for big hauls in the summer then today can be overlooked. We didn’t get any better or worse, just another season floating in no man’s land.

I know he's good for our 'playoff push', but if we were getting interest in Hanley, today would have been the right day to move him. He's playing great and his value has never been higher, and would have been savvy asset management to turn a waiver wire pickup into a pick from a desperate GM. Could've recouped an easy pick right there.

Sure, if you're a destination that players want to go to, then it's possible to acquire good players outside the draft.
When you're a small market Canadian city with -30 winters, a run down arena and a rep for not wanting to pay your young stars, your only viable option is the draft.
So, since that means we have to build through the draft, I wonder what the numbers are for top-5 picks vs the rest, in terms of frequency of picking a bona fide star player.

Pelletier and Kerins also had something going between them.
But I'm a lot happier with Frost + Farabee.
That was a high end goal from JF yesterday.
Maybe they settle in over the coming weeks.

I hope they were atleast listening to offers on the vets.
I'm happy that they didn't make any rental acquisitions. That's a win to me.
