Also been trying to find old pictures of South Center mall with the old arcade, found this gem on beyond.ca on google of the center of the mall in the old old days. Sadly a terrible quality image.

Not sure this is what you are referring to, but there used to be a video store where the dollar store is now beside the Sobeys. Video Update. But it was a block north of the Rogers.

Video Update was awesome. Tuesday was 2 games/movies for 99 cents. Rogers was only 1 for 99 cents. Used to go to VU religiously every Tuesday.

No, but there was Sasz Video as well as Rainbow Video in the NE (Marlborough Park and Abbeydale, respectively). Good times.

Calgary had a good downtown Christmas Parade in the early 2000’s.

I don't remember its name. Video Connection seems familiar, but I can't be sure. They were a small chain that got bought out by Rogers and converted into a Rogers Video. Rogers later built the stand-alone store in the corner of the parking lot and moved in there.
Oh yeah right, that's where it was located, felt like it was standalone but you are right.

I don't think it was video connection though.

Was it Video Showcase? I can picture the membership card in my head because long after Rogers took it over, they still accepted the old card, but I can't remember the name.

Arcade at South Centre was awesome. Was called Arcadia. Next to the kiosks which included a gem called Zumburger.

Speaking of the south does anyone remember Southern Comfort at the Hospitality Inn on Macleod and Southland. Then it became Malarkey’s. Man I think I was there every weekend.

Weird I thought the arcade was Laser Illusions, or something like that?

The old food court at Southcentre was great. It was like a dimly lit labyrinth. Downed many mini-pizzas and root beer floats at that place.

Video and Sound had such a vast collection it was worth a trip downtown on the C-Train to visit. So many obscure genre movies that would be almost impossible to find today.

Psychedelic Thursdays at Malarkey's for the win. It was one of many bars in the economically depressed late 80s to offer 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 drink specials one night a week. In university, our social calendar was built around which bar on a given night had x for 1 drink specials. Fox & Firkin one night, the Republic the next, Malarkey's the next...

Wizard's castle? I played a lot of Killer Instinct there.

I think might have been the arcade in Westbrook Mall. It was by the northern-most west entrance.

Hollywood North = $0.99 highballs. They would bring you four at a time.

The bar in the Blackfoot Inn had specials like that, I think it was something like $0.59 highballs on Thursdays or something like that. You couldn't really order anything, the waitress would just bring around a big tray full and drop them off.

The most expensive part of the evening would have been the cab ride home

It does make me wonder how bad the economy in Calgary would have to get today to see bars almost giving away liquor to attract customers. Some places in those days even had free food over happy hour (wings, beef on a bun, etc.) just to get people in the door.

Happy hour at Peanuts Pun in the Carriage House Inn and it's 50 cent draft specials. Being a Beaverbrook grad we'd skip classes on Friday afternoons and walk on down to get us some beers.

On one such afternoon the principal's son got caught drinking while underage and caused quite an embarrassment for his dad.

Won't happen again, imo. The environment is way different now where chain bars will just put the foot down on independent bars in prolonged bad times like chain restaurants and chain stores do.
