That's the thing I'm wondering about. If the data is too much (I already have data on my phone), will the GPS chip even benefit me?

It depends on the implementation.. I would expect that the GPS chip works fine without data, just takes longer to get a correct position. That's how it seems to work on my iPhone when I don't have data.

I suppose that would be the bonus of having a navigation app that loads maps onto the phone. I use a cheap one that needs data, so I've never been able to test whether it works or not. I suppose if it works on your phone it would work much the same on an ipad.
edit: How long has Navigon offered an only-Canada app? Still $60, but only 421 mb.
nm ... It was TomTom that offers only a Canada/US or a US only.

I'll be getting the wifi version tonight. I'm in the U.S. and don't want to rely on AT&T for service, so I won't even consider getting the 3g device unless/until they open it up to other providers. Even then, I'm probably more likely to use my Droid to look up something quickly than carry around something that won't fit in my pocket whenever I'm away from home. If I were regularly riding the train, I'd feel differently, but I don't.

I think 3G is going to be the way to go. If Rogers ends up reverting back to their evil selves of two years ago, I can always just sell it for $50 less and then buy the WiFi one.
I'll just tell myself it's a $50 early-adoption fee. Lord knows, I've paid enough of those fees over the years...

I bought the Wifi version with the intention of jailbreaking my iPhone and putting MyWi on it. Unfortunately I'm an idiot and upgraded to 3.1.3., so I can't jailbreak.
Is the iPad JB from Spirit also supposed to jailbreak 3.1.3?

iPad Competitors Begin to Disappear Even Before Being Released
Quote:
Silicon Alley Insider yesterday noted that HP appears to be putting its "slate" tablet computer on hold as it looks to complete its acquisition of Palm. The move appears to be related to HP needing to make decisions about how exactly it will integrate Palm's webOS smartphone operating system into its product roadmap.
HP's slate, previously destined to use Microsoft Windows, was demoed by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer in early January, several weeks before Apple introduced the iPad. The following month, HP indicated that it was refining the final specs of the slate in response to the iPad and looking to price it competitively with Apple's tablet device.
|
First MS cancels the Courier, now HP is suspending the Slate. Apparently, they are dropping Windows 7 from the device and looking to use some form of WebOS (from their acquisition of Palm).
Suddenly, the Slate seems a bit more interesting... although it's been pushed back to vaporware status.

Downgrade your firmware to 3.1.2 so you can jailbreak. Then use the firmware cloaker in Cydia to spoof your IP to 3.1.3.

Not to rub it in or anything, but we used MyWi in conjunction with KTrain's iPad and it worked like a dream. Sadly I'm a tool and forgot to plug my phone in so i had to conserve battery life, but in the short time we used it it was great (even found us quite accurately in maps).

To answer the earlier question, if (ah ... who am I kidding ... when) I get an iPad, it will certainly be the 3G version. Maybe I'm odd but I've long wanted a data-only device (not wi-fi, doesn't count as far as I am concerned) ... I have an iPod touch ... and can't really use it anywhere I go when I am out.

So let me get this straight...You can buy the 3G version (when available) from someone like Rogers and have to pay them for any data plans. But you can also just buy the wifi version (when available) from Best Buy for example and not worry about any data plans?
Is this correct or am I missing something?

You can buy either one from Best Buy. The WiFi doesn't use a data plan, and the 3G is unlocked, so you can go to any carrier that supports MicroSIM.
