Yea... any sound at all. I like having it make a noise to let me know I have an e-mail during the day but don't want it on while I'm sleeping. Since I'm trying to do away with the landline, I need to be able to be woken up by an incoming phone call but don't want to be disturbed by some stupid spammer or mailing list stuff coming in at a really weird hour.

I'll look into this boxcar thing - maybe it can do what i'm looking for.

There is no app for sound profiles - huge fail on apples part. I am in the same boat as you. Before ios4 you could use a jailbroken app called auto silent to setup sound profiles, but it's broken under ios4 and I haven't seen word of any update.

Huuge fail by apple

Was that the same app that turned things on and off in your settings depending on what wifi hotspot you entered? I'd heard something about that, so you could have your phone behave differently at home or at work just by entering the house of office. I think android has something like this.

there is a jailbroken app that allows you to set sound profiles based on your CALENDAR events. (CalendarPro) on Cydia.

The VEVO app is fantastic for music videos. HQ resolution. I expect this to be featured on the iPhone 4 soon. Totally free as well.

Just another public service announcement about apps like Boxcar - when you use a third-party app/service like that to generate push notifications for other sites or services, you are essentially handing over all your login info to an untrusted third party.

For many sites it wouldn’t be a big deal (who cares if your twitter account gets hacked, really), but I also see people using it for corporate stuff, like push notifications from their internal email systems at work, and that’s where it gets really dangerous.

Not sure if it's a new deal or not, but ghosts n goblins is 80% off right now, only 99 cents.

I'm going to recommend you try the lite version. I payed the $2 because ... well ... it's $2. I'll probably never play it again after a quick run through. It's not necessarily the fault of the app, I just can't stand the control of a sports game on a touch screen. I completed perhaps 2 or 3 passes in an entire game, and usually the puck went in a total different direction from were I was aiming. Pretty terrible imo. Give the lite version a try though, perhaps you'll disagree.

By the end of the first game I got the hang of the controls. I had problems with passing too for the first half of the game. I just iced it when I was trying to center it...

It's not an amazing game but it's pretty cool for a quick hockey fix on your phone. Totally worth $2, IMO.

Do you think it would be playable on the iPad?

I haven't tried playing a "two thumbs" game on the iPad yet so I can't say. Seems like the bevel might get in the way a bit.

I'd have liked to see more of a "tap on the player" style passing system like in Madden 11. I wonder why game manufacturers are so afraid to use the touch screen in games...

Bingo. Recreating the controller on-screen just isn't working (for me anyway). I'm playing it on the iPad and it's not pretty. May try it on the phone to see if I can hit the buttons I mean to, because I had a hard time with the giant buttons. I didn't notice the bezel getting in the way, but I did notice that I never found a comfortable hand arrangement.

I'm considering deleting the 2K11 app because I now have Kesler's face on my iPod. So weak.

The greatest 2D shooter ever created, R-Type, is in the app store now for $2. Touch interface isn’t great, but it sure is neat to have R-Type on a phone.

They did it right too - un-retouched graphics and music are the way these games should be enjoyed.

R-Type is my favorite game of all time. I own copies of it on multiple systems. However I can't bring myself to spend the 2 bucks on this version. The touch controls would just ruin the game.

Saw this one on Breakfast TV this morning and have just started playing around with it a little, but its pretty awesome! Its called FoodScanner and for $0.99 you can scan the bar code of things and it gives all of the nutrition counts. It will also keep track for the day for you.

Only issue is that its great for larger companies and things available in the US, but not as great in Canada. For example I had a box of "Our Compliments" granola and it didn't recognize that, but almost everything else I can think of it picked up.

Anyway, pretty cool if you're interested in that sort of thing!

I hear ya, and I’m the same way - R-Type lives anywhere I can find it. You’ll cave on this one, I know you will. The touch controls are not that bad, particularly since this was only ever a two button shooter.
