I don't know about deep trouble. There's a lot of uncertainty for sure but IMO there was enough talent on the roster to likely make the playoffs if they weren't historically unlucky in 1 goal games or if the goaltending didn't go from a team strength to a team weakness in a single offseason. GM could be gone, head coach could be gone, and there's a handful of key players set to hit free agency next season. Lots of possible changes but if the right moves are made they could have a bounce back season next year as that's the cycle the Flames have been on going back almost a decade.

Sometimes I wish the Flames would think outside the box strategy wise when down a goal with less than 6 minutes to go.

Flames have pretty good PK'ers (Lindy-Backs), (Coleman-Lewis), (Eatbread-Dube).
So 5 on 5 why not let the other team settle in the Flames zone, Flames play it as a PK and the F3 (Kadri, Toffoli, Huberdeau or even Duehr) can cherry pick at the red line as ice gets quite chippy at end of periods so one missed pass by other team and you send F3 on a breakaway.

Ok I know this is an extreme but what I'm saying is the coach does not want this team to cheat defensively and therefore have trouble scoring off the rush (modern NHL).

Nick Ritchie scored one in a game as he was new and probably didn't know that you can't do that in Sutter hockey!

Still have our first round pick
Still have our second round pick
Coronato signing more likely with team out of it

Balance restored!

Part of me hopes they luck themselves into a rebuild.

Assume bad luck.
Bring back most of the team.
Have a miserable season.
Sell six impact UFAs at the deadline.

Seems like the quickest way to a reset.

any tips on how to sell this to a STH group so they don't all bail in advance of the requisite miserable season...

The 4th line was our best line last night. Sutter couldn't recognize the reason why was Walker Duehr. He was flying and our best player. Put that kid with better players that can actually keep up. He should of been the extra man on the ice with the goalie pulled. Lucic/Lewis on the bench.

I just don't see that as an option as bringing back most/all of those players on the last year of their deal places them in that Gaudreau situation where if they are in a playoff spot (very likely given the Flames penchant for making the playoffs every 2nd season) they aren't going to sell and then end up lose some/all of these guys for nothing which is something this organization simply cannot afford to do. Lots of hard decisions to me made this summer.

How dare he not be spending 100% of his time watching hockey, playing hockey, or thinking about hockey!

The 4th line did have a good game last night, better than most, but playing them when you need a goal is about sending a message. Seems clear something not working between owners, GM, coach and players. But I’m not putting it all on Sutter, problem is figuring out who is in charge of getting things right.
Lol at Huberdeau working on his golf game. Nothing at all wrong with it and a fitting epitaph to the season.

It was just a funny coincidence. He absolutely should be able to do that and he was quite gracious and awesome. My kid has his jersey. Calm your wiener.

I’ve defended Sutter quite a bit to family and friends this season, but it’s pretty clear he has lost the plot now. I used to be 50/50 on if he would be back next season, but I’m more like 80/20 now that he won’t.

Maybe I’m just too optimistic by nature, but a new coach with a strategy adjustment and a new voice would do a world of good for this team. I still believe they are much better than their record indicates this season. Having some full time, young energy will help too.

They are committed to Huberdeau so I would bring in someone to get his confidence back. Andrew Brunette/Mitch Love would be interesting to see.

Huberdeau - Lindholm - Toffoli
Pelletier - Kadri - Dube
Mangiapane - Backlund - Coronato
Duher - Ruzicka - Coleman

Andersson - Weegar
Hanifin - Tanev
Zadorov - Stetcher/Kylington

Markstrom
Wolf

If things go poorly you are ready to sell a ton of UFA’s at the deadline.

Ugh. With the season on the line that's pretty inexcusable.

There is no way the go into the next season with Sutter, Kadri and Huby still together. The easiest thing to do is get rid of Sutter and see if your highest paid forwards in franchise history can bounce back next season
