Damn, Gael injured himself and was forced to retire. It's starting to look like his body is just no longer going to allow him to play at the highest level.

Katherine Sebov and Rebecca Marino get the Stadium treatment in Miami today. Of course, it's mainly because they are playing Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff respectively, but still that's pretty cool especially for Katherine. Unfortunately, I don't expect either to win today, but that's why you take the court, you just never know.

Agreed. Tbh, I think Andreescu can beat Sakkari but I don't like Leylah's chances either.
Still, as you say, that's why you play and it is fantastic to have 4 Canadians in the round of 64.

Through seven games, Sebov has looked fine. She's down a break, but Pegula looks a little flat out there and if Katherine breaks to get back on serve, this first set could be up for grabs.

That's too bad, Katherine had a couple break points to get back on serve, couldn't cash in on either and then Pegula breaks to take the opening set 6-3.

Pegula cruises to a 6-3 6-1 win. She certainly upped her game in set 2 and Katherine looked a bit fatigued to me (you have to remember she was playing her 4th match this week so it's understandable). Really good week for Katherine as she cracks into the top 150 in the WTA rankings, it should give her plenty of confidence going forward.

Coco takes the opening set 6-4. Rebecca is playing very well, Coco just playing a little better on the big points.
Edit: Rebecca just broke Coco and is serving at 2-1 in set 2.
Edit 2: Three straight breaks of serve - Welcome to WTA tenns. Rebecca giving Coco all she can handle now serving at 3-2

Marino looking good. Confident. Hitting good shots. Long way back, obviously, but she is playing well.
Edit : haha 4 straight breaks and back on serve

Coco takes it 6-4 6-3 but the score doesn't reflect how close this match turned out to be. Very good quality from Rebecca, Coco just delivered when it mattered.

Not looking good for Dominic Thiem as he is down a set and a double break to Sonego in Miami.
Edit: Sonego has had a really good start to 2023 (nice victory over Felix recently) so it's not much of a surprise seeing him win 7-6 6-2 over Thiem. It makes me wonder if Domi will ever be able to find his US Open championship form again, though.

Shapo looking pretty good thus far today versus Guido Pella. Won the opening set 6-3 and striking the ball well, hard but staying disciplined.
Edit: And of course bad Shapo returns early in set 2
Edit 2: Okay, Denis breaks right back. Good stuff. Now I have to flip to the Bianca - Maria match.

Maria takes the opening set 7-5. Good match so far, Bianca playing well, Sakkari just a little bit better.

Three games played in set 3, three breaks of serve. Bianca serving at 2-1
Edit: Consolidates the break with a lovely passing shot and does the lawnmower celly ala Rafa lol

Bianca breaks again and is serving at 4-1 in set 3.
Edit: Sakkari breaks back. The tension in Miami can be cut with a knife.
