I certainly feel that since Gross spoke publicly about Johnny's contract status that he is certainly feeling the pressure to get a deal done and using this as a move and the media to help move his position forward with BT. Obviously there is pressure on both sides but this almost seems like a little desperation to go out and say such things publicly.

Combine this with Monahan's earlier statements and it wouldn't be too far fetched if Johnny told Gross to get this done soon even as early as next week. Gross probably said give me a couple more days to squeeze them before settling.

It sounds like Gross likes to use whatever leverage he has to try to make a deal, thus I think that was the point of releasing that statement. Key word "at this time." Obviously the Flames want to keep it behind closed doors but I think Gross is trying to use public perception as a form of leverage.

Also, I tried doing a bunch of digging on old clients and it does seem that Gross does have a history to play hardball, push it to the limit, and likes to negotiate up until the very last day. I'm also not sure as to how much his clients are aware of the details of the negotiations.

"Why would I want to play for them another year if they weren't interested in giving me a fair long-term deal?" St. Louis said. "If that was the case, I would've said, "Let's get it over with now and not have the distraction all year long.' I might as well have moved on then."

That nearly happened as talks deteriorated as late as Tuesday.

"Then it all came together quickly," said Lewis Gross, St. Louis' agent. "The key was an open dialogue, a willingness on both sides to make this work and adding the sixth year."

After discussing four- and five-year deals, the Lightning - looking to break the logjam in the talks and asked by Gross to "cut through everything and make the best offer possible" - added a sixth year Wednesday morning. A few telephone calls and a few tweaks later the deal was done.

The deal is incredibly shocking considering that up until news of the trade broke, both Saad and Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman hadn’t been shy about their belief they could come to terms on a new contract. Bowman had previously said bluntly that a new agreement for Saad was coming, and Saad had told Chicago Sun-Times reporter Mark Potash following the Blackhawks’ Game 6 Stanley Cup clinching victory that the two sides would, “get something done. It’s an incredible city; incredible team. I’m looking forward to being here.”

An interesting wrinkle in the scenario, however, came from TSN’s Bob McKenzie, who reported that Saad contract requests were in the $6.5 million range per season. McKenzie also reported that an offer sheet of that size may be coming as early as tomorrow, which is another reason the Blackhawks may have had their hand forced. McKenzie did, however, add that Saad’s agent, Lewis Gross, disputed the fact Saad was looking for a six-year deal. If the dollar figure is correct, though, it’s evident why the Blackhawks believed Saad’s ask to be too rich for their blood.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported Monday that the Flyers were believed to have offered a four- or five-year deal that averages $7.5 million to $8 million a year. Flyers chairman Ed Snider said LeClair is asking for significantly more than the $9 million a year he requested in arbitration.

The John LeClair negotiation is quite interesting as the ask was pretty high and the arbitrator ended up awarding a bit under what Philly was offering. It really makes you wonder how far apart the two sides may possibly be, although this thought is based on a negotiation 16 years ago haha.

Lewis will be inundated with the number 6, and then he'll subconsciously think it's a good idea to have Johnny sign for a number stating with 6.

Yeah his attempt at posturing makes Brad Treliving look really bad and in all likelihood isn't true. I don't think anyone in the hockey world believes a guy like Brad would just cut off all contact for a month heading into the season.

Yeah, with how tight lipped the Flames are when it comes to stuff like this it's pretty obvious that this is just the agent posturing to the media to try and create pressure on Treliving.
