Here's some commentary from Pete Carver the chair of constitutional studies at the UofA. Those criticizing Nenshi should consider this analysis before spouting off that he's a coward or that the charter doesnt guarantee the right to camp in a public park. It's a far more complicated issue than that and I'm positive he's consulted both city in-house and external counsel in coming to his decision.

However, Peter Carver, chairman of the Centre for Constitutional Studies with the University of Alberta faculty of law, said there is a “significant possibility” the courts could rule against the city if the municipal government were to confiscate the protesters’ gear.
“I think it’s for a good reason that both the City of Calgary and other municipalities dealing with similar occupations are doing as they appear to have been doing to date,” Carver said. “And that is to be cautious in addressing these questions and to afford a significant leeway.”

Thats fine and everything, but that shouldn't prevent the city from writing as many nit picking bylaw enforcement tickets as possible.
And I challenge the analysis in a way. They have a constitutional right to gather and protest, but they don't have a constitutional right to camp overnight.
To an extent I admire the fact that the city is allowing them to stay there at our sufferage, but where the city failed was that they didn't start to enforce bylaws until way after the fact.

That makes sense and I do understand that view. I do wonder how Halifax managed to roll in and disassemble the camp though? Either they have opinions on the otherside or figure its worth the argument I suppose.
It's 2011, who doesn't have a high definition video camera?
Only joking. Sort of.

I was a young man when I learned the only way to truly be real is to stop trying to be rich and give my life to others. The man who taught me this conquered cancer with this idealism. I to experienced healing and strength when I decided to give my life to the world rather than taking at every opportunity. Dr Smith is still alive and well 24 years later.
Occupy Calgary Olympic Plaza wants to give their time to rake your yard, clean your car, change your oil, clean your rugs and just about anything else we can do for you, for free. Yes we hope to help those in need, in particularly seniors or just those who want to get to know us. It is easy, just email me at 403 861 7915 and we will come and help you. We travel by bus or you can pick us up. We want to connect with you, we want to share our research into the economic recession with you. Most of all we want to show we are greater than the greedy by doing something unselfish for others. We are strong and we will work for free, and for a greater cause. I will take 2 calls per day, phone before 7:am
Interesting idea, although I'm sure this won't last long. I can't help but feel this is a reactionary move rather than that of a larger political statement. It's a positive step though, and I'm sure some could use the extra help if its legit.
That said, I'm sure the idea is going to be picked apart here like a pack of hyenas on injured prey.
That is supposed to make them look bad? Still naive as all hell but someone offering to help seniors and the impoverished for free is a pretty odd thing to criticize someone for.
How often do you volunteer your time? And I don't count an anti-protest as a volunteer activity.

I'm assuming this was directed at me.
Posted it as a point of interest on the topic. Neither supportive, nor to "make them look bad".
Not sure what my volunteer time has to do with it, all the same I will answer.
I am the treasurer of my community association and am a WRP director. Both of these generally keep me busy most week nights and weekends. Averages about 20-25 hours a week. (this is on top of my regular 40 hrs/wk at work)
And as previously mentioned in this thread we occasionally help out homeless individuals by providing them transitional housing. (Currently have 2)
We give to the food bank; contribute money to charities and give blood.
