I predict a whole pocket of CP conservatives who haven't said squat here for months will pop back in here if/when the UCP win tonight, and proclaim that Albertans aren't lost to socialist ideologies, hope still exists for freedom and liberty, and we should all give Smith an honest chance because she loves this province and wouldn't say a bad thing about it, warts and all.

That pretty much what happened when Notley stammered a bit during the debate and Smith came across like a polished media personality.

When you say make election day a week long what do you see as the difference between that and what was done this time?

I guess that makes sense.
Pretty much I would say forgo all the advertising about voting early and the worry about voting before the campaign ends.
The election campaign is supposed to be 28 days (at least), I would just say that the election is the week of _________
I know many other countries have votes carrying over a number of days.
I don't know - the process has always felt so antiquated:
- why do I have to take my ballot all the way across the gym to make a check mark, then go all the way back?
- why is only the advance vote (sort of) computerized
There are always complaints about long lines, these are 3 things that can be done to ease them.

Not voting because you don't like any of the politicians is silly. If you're waiting for one of these politicians to be worth a vote, you'll never vote.
Vote for the least ####ty option. Or the most self serving option. Or the option with the best hair. But it's silly not to vote.

One of the more common refrains I've heard in the past week is that there are people who are voting UCP under the assumption/hope that when they win they will turf BusTits as leader and promote someone else. But even if by some chance that does happen, those people do realize that the same people who selected her as leader in this first place, will also be the ones choosing the next leader, right? And that, believe it or, she can run again, and win again? Ultimately this viewpoint is why I give the NDP virtually no chance tonight, and I could see this being not particularly close.

The worst part about that line of thinking, is somehow convincing themselves that this time the UCP will figure it out and pick a better leader.
Look at the list of conservative leaders since Klein. They haven't been getting better.
Thinking "I don't like Danielle Smith, but hopefully they'll replace" her is setting yourself up for disaster.
Win or lose, I have 100% confidence that Danielle Smith won't be the UCP leader at the next election. I'm also pretty certain whoever follows her will somehow be worse.

I expect a bunch of formerly “not interested in provincial politics” posters to make their way here if NDP win.

I'm going to optimistically say 44-43 NDP. NDP take 17 in Calgary including all of the NE and NW, sweep Edmonton, plus 4 Edmonton area seats (Sherwood Park, St Albert, Morrinville, Strathcona), both Lethbridge seats, and Banff/Kananaskis.

That's stupid. Those people should vote NDP. If Smith wins, she's going to be there for 1 even 2 or 3 mandates. She's young and represents that the party is today, a truly united one. You can't vote for her and then defeat her from within. Who's the progressive conservative leader out there who could unseat her? Kenney's probably fit that bill the best.

UCP candidates were actually campaigning on that in Calgary. I think a UCP win will just embolden the people who got her in as the leader. They knew that if they put up anyone but her they would win but still rolled with it and they will probably get the win.

sure but that's just stupid. They're going to be in for 12 years of Smith
they should be voting for 4 years of Notley and then regrouping.

Just because it's stupid doesn't mean it won't happen. I'm sure you know that.
Plenty of people using the myopic reasoning to vote for UCP because Bus Boobs will be turfed soon afterwards is in for as much disappointment as a Flames playoff run.
