I honestly don’t understand all the love for Howard. I don’t think he’s an upgrade on either of our goalies. Honestly, if I’m missing something, I’m sincerely open to hearing it.
I’ve said it a lot lately, but I’ll say it again—I’d like to see:
-one more two-way forward who can play in the bottom nine
-one more bottom 4 physical but mobile D
If the cost on either or both is too high, I’m happy to stand pat this season and to have Treliving upgrade at the Draft/offseason.
I understand that the goaltending is somewhat suspect going forward, but now is not the time to address it. It’s too late and would mess with the team too much. Besides, the prices are ridiculously high for actual impact players, let alone an aging rental goalie.

Ryan is miles ahead of Ferland IMO. He's been driving his line for the past while.
Bennett as well has played some of his best hockey lately too.

Yeah, not even close. Ryan has been playing well lately but he’s also been playing against other teams 4th lines for the most part. He’s a decent depth guy but he is absolutely not on Ferland’s level.

I'm not sure why it matters if he's "Better" than Bennett or Ryan or Frolik.
He's a useful player. Underrated defensively, one of the more productive 5v5 players in the NHL, and has offensive skills that a lot of this fanbase seems to ignore because they think streakiness isn't a thing (like Backlund isn't streaky? Like Tkachuk hasn't disappeared for a while? Where's Gaudreau's goal scoring lately?). His size is also of the functional sort, which opens up space for some of our smaller players when teams are clogging it up.
More importantly than any of that, he's an absolute beast on the forecheck and brings a combination of nearly Czarnik's speed and more than Neal's physicality, and he can shoot the puck with anyone on this roster.
I'm gonna toss this out there, these stats are strictly 5v5
Line A
659:19 minutes
53.11% unblocked shots
61.39% Goals
Line B
955:40 minutes
51.97% unblocked shots
61.78% Goals
Can you tell me which line is Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm and which line is Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland? Because those numbers are pretty damn close if you ask me. Despite one group playing for Peters and the other for Gulutzan.
So where would he fit?
Maybe you could even do
Gaudreau-Monahan-Ferland
Tkachuk-Backlund-Lindholm
and have a far more balanced top six.
Or maybe you could do
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Tkachuk-Backlund-Frolik
Ferland-Bennett-Czarnik
Hey, that looks like a better top 9 than our current one too. That third line would be an absolute nightmare on the forecheck.

He’s not an improvement and you’re not missing anything.
Since December 1st:
Smith: .903
Howard: .901
Since the start of the 17/18 season:
Smith: .909
Howard: .910
And for their careers:
Smith: .912
Howard: .914
Howard is pretty much just bringing in a second Smith. Both very inconsistent and can look elite at times and then horrible for other stretches.
Wasting assets on Howard would be the last thing I’d do if I was Treliving.

Another thing about Ferland is that it seems likely that he will test the market and be purely a rental. How much would we want to give up for a forward that would be the 6th most productive on the roster if he was only a rental? It makes him a borderline 2nd liner. Probably not as much as Carolina is asking.
Something seems to be keeping him out of the discussions... not just here, but he isn't being talked about much by anyone. Maybe it's the concussions issue as well?

It’s the fact that Carolina is in the thick of a playoff spot and they don’t won’t to move him anymore

Could be completely bogus, but hey, it's something.

Weird that the Rangers would come scout the Flames with Kylington out with an injury. Could be the case, but going for the current best center available sounds very expensive. I wonder if McQuid than would be added.
Either way, would hate to lose Kylington as his skating and puck moving ability doesn’t grow on trees.

Take the goal factor out. The bottom line is Ferland only does OK when he is with a teams best players. He has 5 goals since the end of November, the guy goes well for a bit then takes 20+ games off. He only starts hitting and playing a heavy game again after getting pushed down the lineup. His game is wildly inconsistent while Ryan gives you night in and night out effort.... the same with Bennett.

I think some people still see 2015 playoff run Ferland and not 2018/19 Ferland who’s literally one concussion away from potential retirement. The guy unfortunately cannot play as effective as some slate him to be, just doesn’t happen anymore.
Go back to the last game he played against the Flames, he spent he first period trying to “old school” the Flames to prove a point and ended up missing most of the 2nd and 3rd with an undisclosed injury.
Ferland is not what we think he is anymore, and if we’re dumping assets I’d rather get something more durable at this point. The Ferland we experienced prior to the trade was a very streaky, soft version of what he once was.
He’s also slated to get 6+ mil on the open market as a UFA... I can’t see Ferland playing effective hockey for 1-2 more years let alone 6M worth.

From Brooks this morning...

Jesse Puljujarvi is on IR with a lower-body injury that may cost him significant time. So he is not likely to be dealt by Monday. But the 2016 fourth-overall winger wouldn’t have been on the move anyway, not with Oilers interim GM Keith Gretzky insisting that interested parties also be willing to pick up the final four years of Milan Lucic’s deal at an annual $6 million cap hit.

What about Mike Hoffman? What would he take to acquire?
Despite all the trades that have already happened, there are so many quality forwards potentially available (in no particular order):
Hoffman
Toffoli
Nyquist
Kreider
Stone
Hayes
Simmonds
Johansson
Brassard
Zucker
Staal
Wennberg
Burakovsky
Ferland (possibly...if Carolina still wants to trade him)
Carter
The Flames should wait as close to the deadline as possible. There might very well be some team who gets scared of getting nothing for their expiring contract and the Flames get a bargain. It wouldn’t even surprise me if the deadline looks to have passed and the Flames sneak one under the wire. If they want a forward, there is just no rush to buy now. Wait until the last minute and then look for the best skills, age, and contract size and length to assets out ratio.

Would rather have Miller than Howard as an insurance policy in goal.

Do you think there would be an intradivision premium? It’s not as if the teams are competing this year and Miller could retire this offseason. Miller could come very cheap.
Very helpful comment
