Versteeg's been a really pleasant surprise for me, will be interesting to see what kind of salary he's looking for next year. If they can re-sign him to lower dollar, shorter term deals, I imagine they'd do it.

I agree but lets be realistic. He's not going to be much more than a 4th liner. A third liner at best.
Hardly something to be bitter about.

I don't have strong feelings over Versteeg either way, but I don't see him in the future plans for the club, even next season. Getting even a fourth for a PTO walk on is good value.

Versteeg has shown that this team still needs a playmaking winger with high end skill with the puck, even if they are small. For me, versteeg has fit in as a replacement for hudler. whether we keep versteeg or not is not something i have that strong an opinion on either way.
however, it is imperative that this team have another playmaking winger for the 2nd line next season.

I think they re-sign Versteeg, he's been one of the reasons the PP got going once he started playing the point. He's a great guy in the locker room from all reports, trash talks a lot to other teams, didn't wanna play for the Oilers, on a pace for about 45 points (if played a full season) and I don't know who replaces his production on the RW. Obviously the contract has to be reasonable but I can see him taking a "home-town discount" and back with the team next year.

Really? Previous rumors of Versteeg in the locker room have suggested the opposite.

I don't mind Versteeg and would be fine if they resigned him on a cheap/short deal. But Versteeg, Engelland and one of our goalies are the only UFA's the Flames have with any value. I still think we are a couple years away from making a serious playoff push so Treliving should still be looking to sell these guys at the deadline.

I like Versteeg as well, but do you do it with the intention of protecting him in expansion draft? Is he ahead of Ferland or Brouwer in the Flames plans?
I'd day he should be ahead of Brouwer, but I do find it hard to see them not protecting Brouwer, despite how much I might like it.
If not, why sign him to a good deal, just to lose him to LV?

Really? I've been super impressed. I'd like him to be re-signed if they can get him on another value contract.

In the event that Versteeg is re-signed prior to the expansion draft, I don't think it's a forgone conclusion that he is the unprotected player Vegas definitely claims from us.

To me he's a little like Hudler, a bit jovial a bit fun.. and that's fine when you're winning but if you're not could see how it's grating. Won't put myself in the lockerroom but as a fan stop waving to the crowd when you get kicked out of the game. Should have had your strap tied down. It's a close game the team could have used you. Stop the antics afterwards.

What rumors are these? He won a cup with the Blackhawks and then they moved him for cap reasons, but thought enough of him to bring him back years later and won another cup with him. I doubt they bring him back if he was a problem in the room.
There were some anecdotal stories of him being a dick in junior, but that was when he was a kid and 12-15ish years ago. He's 30, married and has a young family now, I doubt he's the same guy he was when he was 17.

I've heard otherwise, hes a great guy to be around, always joking around and is known to be a prankster. Keeps the team loose. You could even tell he was a funny guy when he was mic'd up during the Flames Superskills competition.

surprised by this line of thinking, versteeg is found money, who rushes out to spend found money on lottery tickets? take versteeg's production and run IMO

I think the Flames re-sign Versteeg. Fits in well on the team. If he gets picked by Vegas, that's ok too. Just keep the term and dollars low (I don't see any team offering term or a substantial raise anyways).

Draft picks are valuable commodities. Flames flipped Baertschi and Glencross in 2015 for two 2nd's and a 3rd. Those extra picks allowed the Flames to acquire Dougie Hamilton and still draft twice in the 2nd round that year, drafting both Rasmus Andersson and Oliver Kylington.
Versteeg is found money but we disagree on the value of that Now vs Long Term.

I dont think any available goalie will be any better than what we currently have. No sense wasting an asset on acquiring a goalie at this stage.
What I think this team needs to do is get get Wideman OFF the ice (trade or pressbox) and internally think we can improve marginally, but would be better if can get a better improvement via trade.

Yeah the feeling I have always got from Versteeg was that he was always a guy that teammates got along with, but maybe not so much a guy that coaches/GMs loved.

I know that hockeyfeed page on Facebook is pretty much a joke but they have a report that states Sakic is trying to trade Duchene and Landeskog to the same team and get a monster return.
I couldn't see it being possible for the Flames without sending out a core piece.
Just for a laugh
Brouwer (cap reasons)
Jankowski
Klimchuk
Kylington
Andersen
Gillies/Parsons
2 1st round picks
Basically a forward prospect, D prospect, and first for both, toss in a veteran contract and a goalie prospect. Still don't think the cap would work though and the Avs would certainly demand Brodie or Hamilton in return.

Nothing like gutting the franchise for one player. I wouldn't trade that package for any one player.
