He probably got fired for missing his shifts because he was out changing the world (or camping illegally, depending on your perspective).
From the companies perspective, he's not been fired for whatever it was he was doing while not showing up for work, it was the not showing up for work part.
No sympathy for the bum.

Nenshi! Are you listening? Git-r-done!
Edit: Im sure Nenshi and council are aware but in case Nenshi has been eating bonbons all day, can some share this link on his twitter: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-s...g.html?cmp=rss

HALIFAX - Police arrested 14 people at an Occupy Nova Scotia site Friday as officers dismantled their encampment in a downtown Halifax park.
The chief of Halifax Regional Police, Frank Beazley, said the people will likely face charges of obstructing police while officers were trying to enforce a city bylaw and remove their camp.
Police moved in after notices were handed out to the protesters in Victoria Park telling them they were in violation of the bylaw.
The bylaw states that no one can camp in a municipal park without written permission from the city.
Beazley also said that in future, protesters will be prevented from setting up camp in any municipal park.

It is amusing that they claim both that they are growing, and that donations have been minimal overall, and stagnant lately.
The comments are an impressive collection of delusions.

$4000.00 worth of donations is pathetic and they expect people to buy em things like gas generators and internet sticks.
They have to realize that the minute that they setup gas generators that the police are going to size them to prevent these people from burning themselves alive.

Butting out in Olympic Plaza has landed one Occupy Calgary protester a $500 fine.
While stamping out a cigarette on Saturday morning, James Bullock was approached by two police officers and reprimanded.
“I think this is complete bull----,” Bullock said. “The government needs to take this and shove it up their a-- and have a nice day.
“I can’t afford this, man,” he continued. “I only get $1,180 a month. You think I can afford a $500 ticket when I need to pay rent, my groceries and medical bills?”
He's paying rent? I didn't know they were paying the city/Olympic Plaza now? Actually, come to think of it . . . he's working?

Is $1180 the amount for AISH? Sounds approximately correct.

There are signs around the park about smoking, plus the rules have been in place for what about 5 years now.
Tough to be you.
and 1180 could also be UI and Welfare.

Doesn't matter to me, the city said it was going to enforce the bylaw rules, and they did, they can't make exceptions based on income.
If they're going to treat the park like garbage, then keep writing the tickets.
Chances are the guy will cut a deal in court and get the fine reduced.

Oh, I wasn't citing that to say he shouldn't get a ticket at all! I'm more appalled that a guy claiming AISH benefits is down there involved in this BS (assuming thats whats going on here). I'm also not particularly impressed with him buying cigarettes with AISH money (again, assuming thats whats going on).

Sorry but if you only get $1180 a month you can't afford to smoke.

“It started a conversation off in this country that really wasn’t happening,” he added. “We hope that conversation will continue.”
I love how deluded these people are... the only conversation they have started is one in which the public asks how long it will be until these losers stop squatting in our park.

The city should start flooding the Plaza skating rink with fire hoses at about 3:00 AM, and if the the workers happen to have bad aim and douse a few tents...

What conversation is he talking about?
Yes we are talking about their demands that we've seen and what a joke they are?
We talked about that girl that OD'ed in her tent in Vancouver
We talked about them using the park as a sewer
We talked about how ridiculous they looked at city hall with their meditation, spirit fingers and singing bowls
They don't talk to the media anymore because they make themselves look foolish.
What has this movement achieved in Canada?
Absolutely nothing.

What, how about the opposite of discrimination, your being treated like everyone else who plays loud music or stamps out smokes in a public park.

I'll keep this short, I love the fact that the city has maned up and started writing tickets. This group was coddled along for too long and they were conducting themselves as if they were above the law.
The fact that they read their manifesto in council chambers without interruption was a smack in the face and our council really need to reassert that no, these protesters are not above the law or our government.

Council allows anyone to come up and say what they want during designated time slots. There's nothing illegal about that whatsoever. Oscar Fetch constantly tells them he's targeted for assassination by the City and throws weird conspiracies around all the time. And they'll still put up with it. Not sure how it's a slap in the face.

Hmmm I got the impression from this article that political demonstrations were not allowed in chambers:
I'll admit I'm not well read enough to know if there's a difference between Oscar Fetch's "robots are in the drinking water" statements and occupy calgary reading a manifesto in the chambers.
Either way, I'm still pleased the city is now writing tickets.
