If anyone is looking to take a mtb trip this summer...I would suggest coming to Vancouver Island. It’s pretty fun. Victoria, Sooke, Duncan, Cumberland, Hornby Island, etc are all represented in these videos.

I’ve run into this dude a few times on the trail now...nice guy, but obviously I didn’t follow him down lol

I'm not new to cycling - I've been commuting to work now for a few years now - but I am new to trails. I'm thinking of renting a mountain bike and doing some off road cycling but I'm looking for trails challenging but not requiring me to go down a rocky cliff face.

Any suggestions??

Well I took the plunge.
2014 Kona Jake the Snake in reversed colors as Bow cycle had Kona reverse the colors. I guess us Calgarians like our bikes more understated.

Took it out for a rip today and enjoyed it very much.

You're in Calgary? There's a ton of stuff in the Bragg Creek area, some of it more difficult than others. Most can be accessed off of Moose Mountain. It'll be awhile before anything is rideable.

Don't want to go over cliffs?

I suggest you harden the F up!

As said above, there is a lot of stuff out in Bragg Creek.
If you just want some downhill fun, COP is a lot of fun in the summer, and there is a good mix of trails.

There is also a lot of good single track out at the nordic centre in Canmore.

Ugh the flood did a number on my 2012 Giant Talon 29". Anyone have any recomendations on getting rust off brake disc's?

They "were" in great condition before the flood wrecked my mom's garage.

http://www.bikepirate.com/trail-report/
Use the above and if a area/trail interests you then click on it for a summary and stick to the trails with the physical and technical ratings that suit your ability.

These trails can be used all year if you want and use the proper bike to suit the conditions. Just stick to the trails that see the most traffic.

Insurance didn't cover new brakes?

I think I would pick up a new pair instead of trying to restore because brakes can be pretty important at times.

Paul at B&P Cycle is one of the good guys. I tore apart the hubs off an ancient MTB I'm setting up for my son and had a very hard time finding cones that'd fit. TBS ordered some and were going to charge me almost $30 for a pair, but, happily, they were back ordered. I was able to get two pairs of new cones and bearings from Paul for about $15.

As for MEC, if I have a bike question, I always go directly to the back and talk to a tech. There's an older guy there (Hank, I think) who is very generous with tips and tricks of the trade. I was looking for an 8-speed RD and the best MEC had was Altus. He suggested I head down to Good Life - I was able to pick up an XTR RD for $5 or so.

After some tough months of rehab following ACL reconstruction, finally got go ahead this week to resume biking (outside, that is). The news was extra sweet as 2 months ago surgeon told me due to a complication another surgery might be in the cards. Luckily, I made some great progress since.
Now if Mother Nature would cooperate...

There is a trail on tunnel mtn in banff, very buff single track. I think it dries out pretty early. It is listed on bike pirate.

I apologize in advance if this has been covered but I couldn't find it. I was wondering if there is any way to get from the Calf Robe Bridge area to the Deer Run area with a minimum of street travel. Right now I have to go up Southland Drive to Acadia then through Lake Bonavista across Bow Bottom Trail then through the residence.

It feels like it's only a matter of time before I get smoked. I've had mirrors just graze my head on many occasions. I would be OK with a dirt path if one exists.

Lots of closures due to the flood but I am not quite sure from your description to your start and destination.
Sorry

I believe that the pathway along the river would be your best bet. It has been years since I have been down that way, but looking at Google Maps (with the "bicycling" option selected to highlight the pathways), you should be able to use the pathways for the majority of the route. Probably not the most direct or efficient way, but it'll keep you away from cars at least. I'm not sure how much of that route was damaged by flooding, and if it was, how much has been repaired.

Careful, I just road from Riverbend to downtown yesterday and it was a clusterfata of detours and destroyed pathways. I also had to carry my bike across a very small "moat" that some kids had used makeshift rocks and wood planks for. To be honest, it was one of my most unenjoyable rides of the year.

The trails are still bad! We underestimate the damage from the floods. It's sad, because we were just getting to some amazing levels. I was thinking about getting out and then I thought about all the closed trails.
