I hate this narrative.
I suppose I see it from a players perspective because Dubas has done a horrendous job at signing his key RFA’s. $7M for Nylander after a bad holdout and only 6 years. $11.67M for 5 years for Matthews.

The players and agents are all waiting for Dubas and Benning to cave. Clearly those are the two weakest links when it comes to negotiatiors in the team side.

I dont know how Boeser affects anyone outside of affecting the floor. I am surprised that this would have affected the Tkachuck negotiation because I always saw his ceiling set by Aho. How does this shake out now? My best guess at sequence:
Point: slightly more?
Marner: 6×11
Aho:5x 8.5
Laine:
Rantanen:
Tkachuck:
Connor:
Boeser:
Meier: 4x6M

Now let’s see how the Marner contract impacts other negotiations. It’s believed Tampa’s last offer to Brayden Point was around three years and $5.7 M AAV... both sides far apart.

I don’t see this Marner deal breaking any logjam personally.

I'm guessing that is because the Point camp are probably asking something ridiculous too like 12 Mill over 5 years. each side Caves by 3 mill bam 8.5-9.5 somewhere.

Hopefully we can sign him later (like we are hoping for Hall).

One wonders if the “base salary vs signing bonus” is a major issue with the Tkachuk talks. Matthews and Marner have a large majority as SB.
JG got a signing bonus (about half of that years salary) the year he signed, and also another similar split for the 20-21 season, which basically is lockout insurance.
Otherwise, the remainder is all considered base salary, and that’s the way the Flames owners and Treliving seem to prefer to operate.
My guess is MT wants a sizeable chunk of SB yearly, or if just salary, more to make up for the lack of upfront cash.

As soon as you start talking 8M I expect a player that will be double shifted in the 3rd period of a game the team is down by a goal. A player that you are waiting to come on and change the momentum of the game. A player who causes the other team to panic to get the right match-ups against. Iginla was that kind of player.
Gaudreau is that kind of player.
Aho is that kind of player
Tkachuk is not that kind of player now. Will he be?
2 years at 5M is the best way for the Flames to go.

Tkachuk is absolutely the kind of player who is depended on late in games. You serious? If you made an NHL 2003 team out of last year's Flames, Tkachuk would be on the "hero line." How many last-minute game-tying goals did he score?

Not quite sure what you were watching last season but I am pretty sure #19 was on the ice late in games if down by a goal or protecting a lead.

Well exactly, if Benning raises the floor that directly affects Tkachuk. If Benning signs Boeser now to $7.5 or $8, than Tkachuk will hold firm at the $9 ask.

Posting in two threads:
It's interesting... after this deal (Mitchell Marner), Toronto is still under the cap by about $298,134.
All Calgary has left under the cap is about $7,950,791 to sign both Tkachuk and Mangiapane (if we do sign him) - so if we sign Tkachuk for anything more than 7.95 million, we'd be forced to make some roster moves or trades.
It's weird... a team with these contracts:
11,634,000
11,000,000
10,893,000
6,962,366
5,300,000
5,250,000
5,000,000
5,000,000
has more cap room then us with these:
???? (8,000,000)
6,750,000
6,750,000
6,375,000
5,350,000
5,250,000
4,950,000
4,850,000
They beat us on value on every contract in the top 8 (some significantly) with one very small (50k) exception.

There's a lot of strange stuff going on in this thread.
Ricardo, it doesn't matter what YOU think an 8m salary player is.
Jack, where are the Leafs contracts significantly better value across the board? Giordano and Gaudreau's deals are the two best value deals on either team.
I think a lot of people are pretty high strung about Tkachuk not being signed and it has gotten worse now that Marnwr is signed.
