Other than that we got a luggage bag, some GC's and some chocolates.

No offense, but how the hell do you not realize you've missed a weeks worth of pay?? I make good coin and I'd be banging on HR's door the next day.

I am trying to figure out the math on this one.
Is there a specific line on your tax form that causes an increase in taxes on just your bonus?
Or is it just easier to imply profanity at the target without an understanding of how things work?

Well to be honest I was being paid weekly and the pay they missed was only about a half weeks actual pay so I never noticed the difference in the bank account. It wasn't until a couple days ago when I was doing my end of the year finances that I noticed a cheque missing from my book keeping. Luckily I noticed it now before their end of the year or else I would have been SOL.
Anyways, I'm just happy I caught it, nice little bonus to find at the end of the year.

If you're getting paid via direct deposit, I could totally see how that scenario plays out.....time tends to fly and if you don't directly see a cheque, you don't really think about it. Unless you live paycheque to paycheque, I doubt one weeks salary is that noticeable to a lot of people.
As for the topic, Ive yet to receive a bonus myself. Then again I've worked for myself most of my career, so I miss out on free money like this. Well until some doofus goes and takes my work....

It's just part of your taxable income. The only reason they would take a larger chunk of it than your regular paycheque amount is because the government tries to estimate how much taxes you owe when they deduct taxes from your pay. When they see a bonus cheque, it's treated like regular income, so in their system, it seems like you're getting paid a lot per paycheque, so they deduct the suitable amount for someone making your bonus amount as a regular paycheque.
You get it back if you've paid too much tax on it once you file your taxes.

Oh, for sure. And if they made a mistake and accidentally gave you too much money, they expect it back right away or you pay hefty interest penalties on it. Why can't I charge them hefty interest for keeping too much of my money?

Reading
Is
Fundamental
He said 2000 in one week. $108K per year isn't outside the realm of possibility.
Also, in what universe are there 57 weeks in a year?

Okay, the most the government would take, based on income tax rates in Alberta would be 29% federally, and 10% provincially.
But for them to be taking that 39% (less than half I might add), you'd be making over 127k (Before the bonus).
So if the government really is taking "Almost half" and that's causing you to troubles getting enough food, then maybe you should lay off the caviar.
Jokes aside,i f you make less than $82k which, considering you're complaining about eating, I'm guessing is the case, then you're only paying 32% which is quite a bit less than half.
But we all pay taxes man, why should a bonus be any different?

Off topic...Maybe its just me then. I check my bank account and visa statements online at least weekly, if not more. Leaving $$ in my chequing is a complete waste of time. I run my chequing account as close to $0 as possible. Everything else goes into my investing account.
Back to the thread...we're all guessing at our bonus (not until February -see year end financials)...but I'd guess mine will be in the 20% range.

My Xmas Bonus was $250 on my cheque, $100 in cash, and a party for 22 of us at La Luna Rosa that cost over $6000. Now THAT is pretty sweet. We drank the place dry, literally. They ran out of everyting.

I hate seeing that 39% come off the ol' bonus and paycheque... But then again, that's why we have such awesome roads and hospitals and... Wait, nevermind, give me that back!

No bonus in 2008, small-ish bonus in 2009 and much more than I expected this year (about 15% of my yearly before tax). Our bonuses are based on years, seniority and productivity. Considering that my department was gutted in the last two years (we went from a high of about 150 to a low of about 30) I assume I did well due to my seniority and longevity.

Ok, everyone who got more than 10% bonus for Christmas needs to send me a PM with the name of the company they work for so I know where I need to apply once I am finished school.
