Yep. I was briefly in Manchester this year (briefly...like, 30 minutes). My only jacket in England was my Adidas Liverpool one....to avoid violence as I was by myself, I went without, even though it was the coldest weather I had all trip.

That stuff hasn't happened here for years, outside of that Millwall v West Ham pitch invasion a little while ago. You will get trouble before and after matches in pre-designated areas, but there is so much police protection during the matches and around the visiting supporters that it is virtually impossible for anything to kick off.
Having said that, supporter violence is endemic to the sport, globally. No where more evident than in South America where buses are overturned, pitches are invaded bi-weekly and people are killed on an astonishing basis.

Even though I no longer think football parks are war zones, I have to take the good with the bad*. I mean, I went to a random pub last night and the atmosphere was just amazing. By the end it was all singing and laughing, even Sp*rs and Goonar fans having a post-match chat. This was in South London and there were probably 20ish people yet it was more fun than any Flames game I've watched at a pub, and the latter includes games where the pub was packed.
*I'm not condoning hooliganism just saying that with this much passion there will be an environment for it to occur. Hopefully the necessary precautions will be taken to snuff out the negative elements while allowing the positive to still thrive.

While I won't go alone to a derby match, the only times I feel really scared as a Charlton supporter is going to Palace or Millwall. However, they are located in the dodgier parts of London.

I sat with the home supporters at Portsmouth last season when they played West Ham. I went with a lifelong Hammers fan. He wasn't acting like a nut so no mind was paid to us.

That would be your loss because you would be missing out on the of sports biggest rivalries and quite possibly one of the best atmosphere's you could ever experience.

I HATE losing to Arsenal but I'm kind of glad we're out of one of the English cups. Too many games will hurt us in the CL and league play.

You definitely aren't wrong but it depends. I haven't been to a game in Argentina yet so I will reserve judgement, but I went to the Chilean league final in the capital Santiago 3 years ago and other than a few idiots that didn't have tickets clashing with police, nothing happened. I live in Sao Paulo now and went to Morumbi stadium for the Libertadores return leg between Sao Paulo and Internacional. Nothing happened and it was a close game where the home team lost. Internacional had their supporters in a small corner of the stadium but they were free to cheer and nothing happened. Same setup in chile. I know it happens here and sometimes quite fiercely but luckily I haven't seen it yet.

What a dreadful night on the Mersey, though it has been a good week (so far) for the Albion. Up to 2nd on goal difference.
Gus Poyet is a legend.
