So when they so no software update, does that mean AirPlay won't work on my current ATV? Reason I wonder is Airtunes supports it now, I just wonder if Airplay will just magically work :P
Won't matter much anyway since i'll gladly buy a 120$ ATV.
I would assume you will be able to stream music, but not video from an iPad or iPhone or pictures from your computer. Still can't believe the original ATV couldn't stream pictures.
In many cases, it’s not that bad. Definitely worth a couple hours to do some test encodes, but I’ve transcoded DVD rips from DiVX to h.264 and its not bad. The key is to keep the target bitrate the same or a little higher, so you aren’t forcing the encoder to make tough choices about what limited data to throw away.
This is especially true since you’re not watching it on a computer screen 11” from your face, presumably, so many, many encoding artifacts are going to be unnoticeable regardless, or a minor nuisance at worst.
When transcoding fresh content to a h.264 video that is compatible with the AppleTV, my new strategy is to always start with 1080p content (even if already h.264) if possible, and then down-sample to 720p at a bitrate suitable for the device (2500 kbps works nicely). This results in very good quality videos.
With my videos I've done random spot testing of my digital copy vs. the dvd in my PS3. I play the file on both and I have a third party (generally my wife) switch the inputs so I don't know which one is playing. I've never actually been able to tell which version I'm watching.
Anyone know where one can order a micro-usb to usb converter? Since i assume this will be "jailbroken" with a USB stick again, but the ATV has a microUSB port
It’s a balanced review, and about what I would expect. I own two of the previous version, and in its current incarnation, all the existing criticisms and limitations will apply.
I did like this part of the review: "Sound quality was also superb -- standard stereo was rich and wide” ... as if stereo separation has anything to do with the device itself.
I realize that the firmware has been "decrypted" for this, but am really curious to as how long it will take for the extra codecs to be ported to this. Boxee would be nice too, since this is about half the price of the Boxee box.
Anyone know if either of the Apple Stores in Calgary have any new Apple TVs? I'm going to check the Chinook one at lunch, just to see, but I'm not expecting to find any.
Just picked up a new AppleTV at the Chinook Apple Store. They're not on display, but I asked the girl at the counter and she pulled one out for me. At first I thought she misheard me and pulled out an Airport Express, since the box is super tiny.
And people are still lining up for iPhones. Crazy.

Bah! I was in the Chinook Apple store today too. I was expecting my shipment to arrive, but it went from Alaska to Ontario and then down to Indiana. Awesome.
I'm not too choked up, but I wanted to play with it.
Can't be too shocked at the reviews. This thing is what it is, and it's not much different than the previous model. The big difference is the price, and that's not really a feature that will impact a lot of reviews. Perhaps it will, but the fact remains that it will only play a limited number of formats. I still love it though.
