To what point, to say that we shouldn't respect them the same as other people?
"everybody draw mohammed" basically amounts to two wrongs making a right.

Crazy people are going to act crazy. You just hope that no one is grouping you in with them, and you try not to group anyone undeserving in with them either.

I wonder what the response would be to a Muslim that drew disparaging pictures of Mohammed?
Would it be the same rage and retaliation that these (assumedly) non-Muslims drew, or would there be more or less tolerance?
You'd think that there would be less tolerance in this situation given their knowledge (and belief) of Islam, and then extremists would just flat-out ignore non-Muslims who do it, since assumedly, they wouldn't usually know a great deal about Muhammed, the Qaran and other Islamic references. They would just ignore them and laugh at those non-Muslims that do the drawings, since they ignorant and irrelevant to begin with.
But I guess that isn't the case.

Its surprising that a debate about religion always ends up veering in the same direction.
In my opinion, everyone is too sensitive these days. You can say something completely reasonable, and someone will take it out of context and get upset about it.
Multicultualism is a great thing, but people need to understand that someone somewhere is going to get upset about just about anything that could have even a remote connection to their lives.
Drawing Mohammed? What a surprise that some muslim people will get upset.
Calling a white guy a caucausian truck driving hick? Yea they probably won't take it as a compliment.
People play the race card so much to prove their point or arguement. It's too bad we can't as a society just talk about issues in a logical manner without bringing race and religion to the forefront everytime.

I think a muslim who drew Mohammed would be treated extremely harshly. "Apostates" are not treated well in many parts of the islamic world.
That's why you can also look at this event as a victory for moderate muslims. Not everyone in the world has the freedom to stand up to extremism without fear of retribution to themselves and their families.
I know several moderate muslims. Out of respect for their beliefs I will not be donating my facebook profile to this cause. I would hope that they would respect my beliefs as well, and I value their friendship.
By that same token, I continue to support what the movement stands for.

This is such a rad idea. Anyone know when draw a lynched black guy day is? Or draw Moses standing in the gas chamber in auschwitz day? Or how about hindu eating steaks with vishnu day? Or Jesus pounding Peter from behind like brokeback mountain day? Come on theres got to be a few days a year where all us bigots bandy together to inflame a group of people.

Yes it may result in in a "rise" but it also might result in a much needed change in attitude. Quite frankly if someone is so irrational that a cartoon convinces them to kill someone, they were probably going to do it anyway. They just would've found some other excuse.
Blamming the "draw Mohammed" crowd for any potential ensuing violence is like blamming a woman who was raped because she didn't dress conservatively enough. In both cases 100% of the blame lies at the feet of the purpotrators of the act of violence.

Ideally everything you say sounds good, and I don't disagree with you if that's the main goal. And I think if this movement was started by a more legitimate group, I might give it a bit more credit too. However, I'm pretty sure the Facebookers that started this are doing nothing more than trying to start an Internet craze. The article even said that most, if not all, professional comic book artists are steering clear of this. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking the reason for this movement is not an honourable one :P

There's just a certain "groupthink" about Islam that screams "Middle Ages" or, a more modern word, "immaturity."

What about the apparent Catholic "groupthink". You're very selective in your criticisms of various religions.
Just say what's in YOUR heart Cow. Islam in any form is evil.
In your world the worst of Islam seems to represent all of Islam.

Knowing how well FB values privacy, it surprises me how many people are willing to join that group. ... I just checked FB to get a current number of followers and I guess they removed that page probably fearing the consequences for its members.

From the WaPo article linked on page 1:
As a protest, "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" was planned after the creators of TV's "South Park" complained last month that Comedy Central edited their attempts to render Muhammad.
In this case it's Comedy Central, not any islamic group, that was responsible for constraining freedom of expression in the South Park episode in question. It seems to me the protest really should be directed to the network, which made a business decision to edit out images of the prophet. Beyond that, in these circumstances, it just seems pointlessly inflammatory.
