Just to let you know, I have only had my cable for like a year and was able to get the retention deal... I bet even new customers would be able to get it if you call them.

Did everyone who got the reduced prices already have HD and stuff? I only have Digital Basic + Tier 1 right now and I'm wondering if I have any leverage with retentions to move up to HD.

Just tell them that TELUS is offering you the equilivant of the HD plus with Sports package and a free Xbox with phone and high speed internet for $85.00 they should offer you the same with a free HDPVR rental for a year.
Side note, I didn't sign anything with my PVR rental. How are they ever going to prove that I didn't buy it??

As long as you mention that Telus is offering you HD, then Shaw will match.
My brother-in-law phoned Shaw the other day to see what they would do for him. He only has phone and TV with shaw and his internet is through Telus. Shaw told him that if he cancelled Telus internet they will give him $100 dollars and first month free to help pay for the buy-out from Telus. Plus he's getting a new HD PVR, phone with free long distance to Canada and the US plus the extreme internet from Shaw for $85/month.
I think just as long as you mention Telus is offering me this, Shaw will match or do better.
Good Luck.

I am calling shaw tomorrow, there prices are ridiculous. If they can retain me then good, if not I am going to Telus. The package is the same the price is not. One company has a HD box for 250, while the other is 142.
We are paying 188 a month for cable, hd plus, and high speed internet.
IM going to need that to go down to 100 a month, plus hook me up with that free HDPVR asap.

Also is the Shaw for a period of time, or are they offering these new prices as your new bundled price?

They gave me the special prices for a year. After that, she said, call back again and you can most likely get another special deal. Since there is no contract with Shaw, that was acceptable to me.

What's funny to me is that you don't even need to threaten to cancel ... the CSR i spoke to just handed it over.

They probably have had meetings, and have designed packages to offer too retain customers after people have been calling in about this.
Im not surprised they are handing it over that easily. I will be expecting a sexy package as well for them to retain my services, Shaw cable is a damn rip off, and its about time we stuck it too them.
Far too long they have been doing what they want, price hikes when they want. They increased our bill 2 dollars this past month, WTF.

It's funny that people complain how much shaw cable is... and yet they remain with shaw. Why when you have so many different options?
Is it because they provide a BETTER service for a higher price? hmmm.. It's like complaining about the price between the Ritz and motel 8 with the argument "they both provide you with a queen size bed"...

Personally, I'm not complaining at all. Just lowered my bill by $40 and got home phone with unlimited NA long distance to boot. Quite happy in fact.

This exact package that people have been quoting is pretty much what they will offer you as the default if you want to improve your pricing, according to a CSR I know.

Shaw Cable has been on par with Bell pricing for quite a few years for TV. Recent demand for HD has put Shaw on its heels as it tries to catch up to the HD channels that Bell can offer. Only the recent addition of Telus's Optik TV and thier crazy deals has driven pricing down.
As for internet, you might pay more with Shaw, but it has always been, and seems like it will remain, the fastest and most reliable available in the city.
Their phone prices are pretty much equivalent to Telus as far as I can tell, but until very recently has been a more featured but slightly less reliable service for that price.
Top all that off with the fact that they will not make you sign a contract to keep your business. If they start to suck, cancel your service. If Telus starts to suck, you better be prepared to pull out your wallet to cancel. If after your promo deal you realize the Telus product really sucks for the price you are paying for those last 24 months of your product, what recourse do you have? None, because you are on a contract. What recourse do Shaw customers have? Well according to this thread, they can just call back and get the reducing pricing again, because Shaw knows you can switch whenever you want.
Anyway, off of my soap box. I guess I really am a Shaw fanboy. That will probably even increase come next year as we learn what their plans are for wireless are.

162 bucks a month for total HD package, Telephone, and internet with Telus, and no contract. The contract is for the people who want a Xbox or HD box. The box is 142 compared to 250 for shaw the normal HD box.

When I called Telus it seemed the free pvr rental was part of a bundle that included a contract. Are you saying that you can buy this PVR for $142? because without that PVR one of the main Telus advantages, that you can watch your PVR on multiple TVs, is not functional.
If you just want standard HD, then I am sure you can get it without a contract if you purchase your box, but personally I think having a PVR is pretty important.

I phoned Shaw and got this:
All Channels and HD Plus
Movie Channels and HBO (could only get 1 month free, I might phone back in a month to see if I can get it increased for free)
1 HD PVR for a year free
1 HD digital box for a year free
Extreme Internet
Shaw phone with caller id, call waiting and voicemail (extra $5 for voicemail)
Total was $90/month.
