For free entertainment, the ice show at the Corral was nice. Decent music (all rock and roll hits, the guy does a decent AC/DC impression), and some olympic skaters. Good stuff.

The best stuff, as usual, are the components highlighting the Western cowboy traditions. I went to the cattle-penning competition and had a great time watching cowboys practicing a difficult and age-old skill.

Isn't it a bit creepy to have a Michael Jackson tribute with Young Canadians?

Good lord, that is disturbing! Surely you could see the Michael Jackson/Cowboy culture relationship however!?!?

Complete waste of time. I was there last night, and all that was a 15 minute time filler. I would have rather been on my way 15 minutes earlier. Absolute rubbish.

I also noted the irony in the songs being performed by 10 year olds.

I spent the whole 15 minutes suppressing violent urges to attack the Michael Jackson impersonator.

I usually hit the stampede parties and a few breakfasts, and go down to the grounds once or twice a year. This year, I decided not to go to the work party, mostly because it's going to rain this afternoon and it's outdoors. I'm just not that interested in getting soaked, and I really just didn't feel like going. I still plan on heading down to the grounds at the end of the week to see someone at the Coke Stage.

I can't imagine what you must have gone through the first couple years of work, TurnedTheCorner. I must have had no less than ten people come by my office in the last two hours asking me why I wasn't going to the party, calling me a poor sport and a scrooge, and telling me I had no city spirit and was no fun. I've never been the target of so much vitriol before in my life. I feel like I just spat in the face of the baby Jesus.

I admire your dedication to your cause, I don't know if I could take ten days of that incessant barrage year in and year out. Could you share some strategies for disarming the people telling me I'm no fun and basically worthless?

I would tell them that critiquing how you spend your time away from work is not part of their job description. If that doesn't work then wire their cars to blow up.

Has anyone been down to the kids midway yet? Does anyone know how tall kids need to be for the rides?

The stampede needs a major makeover. It looks like they are stuck in 1996.

This year's hidden gem is the Western art exhibition in the back left hall of the round up centre (I think its hall D). Super chill with fountains and stuff, live western music, a wine bar, and a ton of beautiful western art.

Absolutely a must.

In what context? Organization or look/feel of the area?

If latter, they are working to redevelop it so it actually looks more like a 'park'
