How are they going to extend 39th Ave Station to 4 cars? There is a tunnel on one side and 39th Ave on the other side.

^Yeah, that one's a toughie. I think they have just enough room before the tunnel. They may end up relocating the station to the north side of 39th Avenue or closing the street to traffic though.
There's room at all the other stations (some even have piles already in place for the extensions), but there will be other ones that are tough. Some have to have scissor crossover tracks removed because they are too close to the platform, or have structures demolished (like at SAIT station).

IIRC, all the NE stations already have piles in place for the extension to 4 cars.
All in all, the systemwide upgrade to 4 car trains is going to require a lot of temporary shutdowns ( be it stations, intersections, lines overnight or for long weekends, etc.
I wonder if the open house tonight for Whitehorn station will have some up to date information on the systemwide upgrade to 4 car trains.

It seems like they easily have enough room towards the tunnel for at least 1 more car.

Westside commuters brace for big headaches over Bow Trail lane closure
LRT work will plug Bow Trail for 18 months
By Kim Guttormson, Calgary Herald
April 1, 2010 6:28 AM
Commuters who use westbound Bow Trail are bracing for a slower drive, with one lane of the major route closing for the next 18 months to accommodate construction of the west LRT.
"We know there are going to be headaches," said Ron Goodfellow of the Shaganappi community association. "There's no way around it. There are going to be delays."

For those commuting to/from the Westside area:
Quote:
From 7AM Wednesday, April 21st until end of day Saturday, April 24th, 69th Street northbound and southbound will be reduced to one lane between 17th Ave. and Springborough Road SW.
The east sidewalk will be closed through this area.
Traffic movements will be maintained at the intersection of 17th Avenue and 69th Street through this construction. This lane reduction is necessary to relocate storm and sanitary utility line.

If you currently park at the Westside Rec Centre, catch the bus there, or transfer buses there, you should probably be aware that all these services will be temporarily moved to Sirocco Drive next month.
Quote:
In June 2010, Calgary Transit will close the 69 Street S.W. Park and Ride and bus terminal until 2012 to accommodate West LRT construction.
During this time, Calgary Transit will temporarily relocate the Park and Ride and bus terminal from 69 Street S.W. to the new Sirocco Station Park and Ride. It can be accessed from Sirocco Drive.
The new Sirocco Station Park and Ride is expanding to accommodate West LRT ridership. Calgary Transit patrons will use this Park and Ride and bus terminal until the new 69 Street Station bus terminal and Park and Ride opens when the West LRT begins revenue service.
Relocation dates and changes to bus service will be available at westlrt.ca and calgarytransit.com closer to June 2010.

Further to the above, the bus route/Park N Ride changes come into effect on June 5th. Basically, if you use the 69th Street bus terminal or Park N Ride facilities at all, you should be aware of the changes. Just follow the links to see the changes to your specific bus routes:

The Rider's Guide covers all the changes in one document:

Does anyone know what's going on at 14th and 9th SW by the river? Is that a crane being constructed? Is this prep for the Ctrain expansion? I can only catch a quick glimpse whenever I drive by. Bunch of yellow metal things that look like pieces of a bigass crane or something.

^ I think that those big yellow things are concrete molds. They are going to be taken down once the pillars are poured. They already have about 4 or so done. Not sure what it's for, as it's out of the way of the proposed West LRT out of downtown. It's closer to 10th street

I beleive you are describing the launching truss being assembled that will be used to erect the elevated portion of the new west line.
See this post from the forum at skyscraperpage.

Vancouver's new Canada line used pretty much the same method for the elevated sections there.

The pillars are for the Sunalta Station platform. The top of the platform itself will be about 10 feet above the tops of those pillars.
As for the launching truss, you will see these go to work in July when the first section of the elevated guideway will be lifted into place.

Here's a good video done by the Calgary Herald. A progress report done with 18 months to go on the project. Describes what has been done, what is being done now, and what will be done next in various areas of the WestLRT project.

The Herald got the timeline wrong. There's 30 months to go, not 18 - it's scheduled to open in December 2012.
The video is quite good, though!

I can't wait until the Westbook station opens, it will really add a whole new dimension to what is proposed for development there.

Given that I live right on top of the construction, I'm hyper-aware of the timeline.
The journalist who did this up got it wrong both in the text and the voiceover. I'm just trying to find a place on the website to send that feedback.
