Yeah and Toronto proper has been downright devastated by the folks over in Mississauga...
Please tell me you didn't also pull out the "social engineering" card? I see that the CBHA or UDI has gotten to you with their amazing little catchphrase. Of course one completely neglects that their policies and propaganda over all these years has itself been a form of social engineering. See I can turn it around on you! It's a vague statment based in no actual fact.

Here's whats getting lost about the whole thing:
It's not just going to be for pedestrians; it's going to be a place for vendors to set up shop for the day. It IS going to help local businesses, whether they're local in Kensington, local in Eau Claire, or local on Edmonton Trail.
And last I checked, the road wasn't CLOSING! It's going to be NARROWING!
And as for Druh going about the whole thing gung-ho, what do you expect? She championed the idea, put it forth to the public, went through endless debate with this, and finally put it forward to Council, who PASSED IT.
What you do you guys want, Rick "I hate life outside of my shell" McIver to bless it with 10 kisses?
Good lord. It's JUST a road closing for one day, and it's NOT construction. Get over it people!

I'm still waiting to hear why this location is so essential that other locations, you know those that actually have nearby businesses and aren't major arteries, simply won't do the trick.
TBQH I'd be much more inclined to attend this if it was like the lilac festival, stalls on half a street with traffic flowing right beside it doesn't seem nearly as much fun as stalls on a whole street with patios flowing right beside it.

I personally have much less of an issue with this now that's it's narrowing Memorial for a festival instead of narrowing Memorial to create a bike path right next to a more appealing bike path.

Endless debate? In the press, yes. In council or committee? No.

Wow. Overreaction much?
I get it. You don't like having the idea criticized. You don't like it being questioned.
For being all for the idea, you still haven't answered the one valid question that nobody seems to want to touch - WHY THERE???

Because - we're ready to try something new rather than beat dead horses with what we already know.
As George Carlin so simply put it, "come on - take a chance in life."

It's the lack of planning, the lack of consultation, the "my way or else" approach that was taken with this that I personally hate. As Michael Platt of the Calgary Sun put it:

Well stated and to the truth!

If this was meant to be a big festival to bring in people from across the city, the PR of it is absolutely horrible. So, either they don't care what outsiders think (it's a private party) or they are completely clueless. In either case it gets a fail in my books.

Imagine if this festival on Memorial coincided with the opening of the new pedestrian bridge at pretty much the same location on the river.
This city would riot harder than Vancouver in '94.

Parking at Brentwood Park n Ride $3
Ctrain Tickets for 2 there and back $10
Birkenstocks $100
Walking on a street when there's a perfectly good path on the river... useless.

Oh no, 2 lanes of a 4 lane arterial closed on a sunday afternoon once a year! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! It will take me 10 seconds longer to get through! THis is persecution against all drivers of Calgary! I don't think any road should be allowed to partially or fully close at any time if its inconveniences me, especially if it is for a bunch of latte sipping, vegan, cycling and transit-taking communists.

Cory Morgan rocks!

Now, back to Druh Farrell’s vapid closure of one of the busiest streets in Calgary. You see, when this anti-car idea was first conceived, Druh wanted utterly no public input and quietly tried to slip this closure through the back door. Druh’s original plan was to close Memorial Drive on every Sunday in August not just the one now. Druh had no plans for a festival of any sort or any other kind of event. Farrell simply wanted to bung up city traffic as cars are indeed the root of all evil.
With massive public disgust becoming apparent with Druh’s little anti-travel venture, she was forced to back down and reduce this traffic-atery closure to a single day.

When this City shuts down chunks of downtown roads for the Stampede parade during a weekday, and shuts down parts of Memorial for marathons on a regular basis, I do not see why people are mad about shutting down HALF OF A road for an afternoon on a Sunday in August for a street festival.
I swear, some people complain just because they want to.

I'm not really sure what the big fataing deal is here. Chances are most of people who would be against this won't even be anywhere near downtown on a weekend anyway. They are too busy trying to score a good deal on pants at Cross Iron Mills....

You are aware that this was not the original plan, right?

This wasn't about a one day Sunday event, Druh wanted it to be an event for every Sunday in August.
I can understand a parade that brings national recognition to the city, or marathons that raise money for a good cause. As for a festival....no thanks!

I hate vegan hippies as much as the next guy, but what's wrong with having festivals? Things like Folk Fest, Lilac Festival, and the Salsa one bring in tens of thousand of people together for a good time outdoors. Just take another frickin street for gods sake.
