It would be interesting to see the stats on iPod related deaths, similar to this one. I have almost run down at least a dozen joggers completely zoned out by iPods on city bike paths, because they just walk right out onto the path without looking.
I in turn have walked right into a guy at the gym that was doing deadlifts, because I was busy changing playlists, and wasn't paying attention.
Great devices, but man they can be hazardous to your health.
One of many reasons why I don't own one and never will. It's a distraction that can lead to situations like the above. Besides I like my hearing and don't want to be a part of generation that will be using hearing aids later in life.

What the hell, how is this any different then a walkman or a discman of decades ago?
It's a distraction, if you let it be. It will ruining your hearing, if you let it. I've been walking with something in my years since I was 12, and my ears are fine, and I'm almost certain I've never been hit by a Siemens SD160.

I'm going to disagree, I think its more of a problem in bigger cities, like Vancouver, where nearly all the adult male population gets hit by Siemens at least once a week.

Ipods are alot smaller and portable that those bulky discmans or walkmans, hence the way higher usage.

I agree it's a distraction if you let it be. You appear to be of the small minority as most times when i'm walking by someone with an Ipod I can hear thier music blaring.

I was thinking of this earlier today. With a walkman you put your tape in and left it until it went <CLICK>- then you turned the tape over. Even if you were lucky enough to have a super fancy model that had automatic song search; you wouldn't use it as your tape only held 90 minutes of music. You needed enough music to get you through your trip. Even with a Discman; you still only had so much music on a CD and would typically listen to it all the way through.
Now you can have hundreds of hours on your iPod, so you can keep scanning until you find the song you like. All of that while texting your friend, surfing CP, and using the GPS to see that you are crossing train tracks.

That gives me a hell of an idea for an app.
A GPS based system, that warns you anytime you are approaching train tracks, by blasting a freight train horn in the earplugs.
Patent pending.

She was an idiot to fall into the water like that, but the security officers shouldn't have posted it anywhere.
True but you have to admit its funny. No need for her to have a mental breakdown cause "people were being so mean to me on youtube with their comments"...."im gonna call daddy...again"
Edit: shes suing the mall, haha whatever lady, good grief.

Here at the Sunnyside station, I've seen so many people almost get clipped - and you have to open a gate to boot!
Not to be sexist, but I'd say ~3/4ths are girls/women chatting with each other or on the phone. The others are idiot guys walking with their head down, shuffling songs on their iPod.
I'm surprised more aren't getting mowed down, tbh

Cool idea. But make sure you have a good legal team, because if the app makes an error and doesn't inform the person of a crossing and they get hit, well you know the drill. Heck, they'll sue you anyway and claim the app made them do something stupid.
