Yeah, its for sure a patch thing. I had the same problem with the out-of-the-box version due to a massive memory leak. You can update it right from the in-game menu.

I don't have the game here at work, so I can't say for sure, but you do it from in the game. Just go to the settings menu or something like that and there'll be a Update option in the menu.

Ya I just did it. I know nothing about computers and I thought I'd have to go into My Computer and fiddle with a bunch of stuff or something, haha if I knew it was gonna be that easy I wouldn't have asked. Thanks guys!

...so now I got a real prob. I did the update on the 1.74 or whatever it was, but at one point it said "Error", and that it would have to close the update(though another screen said it was completed successfully). And now when I try to get into the game, it says "Error loading shader libraries", and just closes. So I can't even play it. Any way to fix this?

Civfanatics is my resource for all civ related questions (technical troubles and strategy questions). Seems some people are having the same issue as you. One of the many links in the thread should be able to help you:

Nice, ya that's EXACTLY the problem I've having. I know nothing about computers so most of that thread is reading like Chinese to me, but at least I have an idea what to do(sounds like I need to uninstall and then re-install). I may just call the help desk too, before I inadvertantly blow up my comp. At least it seems like its a common prob, I'm sure they've been through this 1000 times.
btw thanks for all the help guys! You're good people.

Had an idea!

Reading this thread is weird.
I loved the idea of building a civilization, loved the complexity behind the game, but I hated the 'turn-based' style.
Now, after reading this thread I want to try it again.
Man.

So I'm on my 3rd run-around on this game and I'm gettin alot better, I'm definitely more aggressive. But there's still alot of stuff I don't get. I've chased the Arabian Empire off their land and cornered them on an island, which holds their final city. Only now I can't get at them. It's the 1700's, so I have no planes(or nukes) in which to hit them, all I can do is keep bombarding them with my ships. But all that does is keep their city defences at 0%, it doesn't actually destroy it. Is there a way I can actually ship soldiers onto the island? Or am I essentially S.O.L. until I discover flight?

Galleons or Caravels. or Any equivalent to transport.
Just need to offload units on an adjacent square and plunder to your hearts content.

As Cliche said, certain ships can carry units. Other ships can't. Just build a few and transfer over your units to the island.

Like others have said, you need ships that can transport troops. Nukes or airplanes won't do much good anyway as you still need ground units to take over or raze a city.

Thanks guys, I actually have a couple galleons and caravels just sitting in my harbour, I didn't even know what they were for. It all makes sense now. Ohhh Saladin, you're going down my friend! So you just move soldiers next to the galleon and they'll hop on?
It's crazy how hooked I've gotten on this game. I can't wait until I'm finally done final exams tomorrow so I can actually play it guilt-free.

No, you actually have to move the units into the boat (ie into the water sqaure occupied by the boat). Depending on the type of ship you'll be able to fit 1-4 units into it. But not all boats can hold units, and some boats can only hold certain types of units. You can consults the in-game civilopedia to get the exact details.

Haha alright this is an embarassing question, and I've seriously exhausted all avenues in trying to avoid it, but I just can't figure it out. It's way too embarassing to ask on the Civ forum. How the hell do you erase previously saved files?? It's from back when the game was glitchy and froze constantly, so I was saving every few turns. Out of only 3 games played, I must have about 60 saved files on there, I wanna erase all that memory.
Just tells ya how computer incompatible this cowboy is.

I think the game by default puts the save files into My Documents/My Games/CivIV/Saved Games/Single or something along the lines. I lent out my laptop, so I can't look up the exact directories, but that general location is as good a place to start as any.
