This year is an exceptional year that it snowed and then got cold right after. Most years it is melting by now.
Do insurance companies give discounts for having winter tires on your car? If there was a significant reduction in at fault collisions when winter tires are used you think that insurance companies would off a discount for using winter tires on your car from November until March.
I might by them if I could get an insurance discount.

They certainly should if they don't.
Even with the roads relatively clear right now, with the amount of ice forming in my neighborhood I feel a lot safer with tires that have good traction.
Unrelated but sort of still is: On the news tonight they said that the new winter tire laws in Quebec are causing a shortage of winter tires across Canada because of the ridiculous demand.

It was just really really really really slow. Mostly stalls, no accidents that I passed. I go from Ranchlands to Sundance.
In other news, yesterday on Crowchild I passed 3 multi-vehicle collisions at the same part of the road (just before it goes under 16th) at 3 different times of the day...

NB Deerfoot 6:35 am this morning middle lane. Cherookee in front of me spins out, veers left, does a 360, slides to the R and hits barrier. I remained shockingly calm didn't touch the brake and missed him by a couple feet. Not sure if the tractor trailer in the R lane missed him - I did hear a crunch, but that could have been just Cherokee v. concrete. I knew I should have just stayed home and played poker...

I took Blackfoot around 6:30am. Didn't take too much longer to get in, but man some of the lanes were still sheer ice! Drive carefully!

How are the roads today?
I have a one hour meeting at the university, not sure I want to spend 6 hours of my day going there and back just for that.

660 was predicting traffic chaos, so I am working from home today. Good decision, as I just spoke with co-workers who took 1hr15min to get to work instead of the usual 25 min, and we're not even downtown.

The roads are a mess and I was having a crappy day till I heard the score from the Edmonton Chicago game last night. 9-2 for the Hawks.

Took me about 5 minutes more than usual to get into work this morning.
Mind you I completely avoided Deerfoot and snuck through Douglasdale and Riverbend.

Working from home again for the 3rd day in a row. The last two days there was a line-up to get out of McKenzie Town. I couldn't be bothered and turned around.

Why after 4 days does traffic get worse? Seriously I think the drive in took 5 years off of my life. The I pull into the parking lot and people forgot how to park as well!!!
I thought as we get used to these conditions traffic would get better, I was lined up to get on the traffic circle at mckenzie towne, did everybody sleep in or something? There is never anybody there when I leave for work.

People who are unable to drive in snow should just stay off the roads period. Even late last night, I was stuck behind yahoos on Southland Drive doing 40km/h. Get a bus pass, people.

I was going to drive to downtown, but Edgemont Blvd. was backed up like crazy. Then John Laurie, was a parking lot.
So I just detoured to Brentwood, parked the car, rode the train.
I hate Calgary drivers in the snow.

too many idiots on the road this morning
country hills blvd was a joke ppl driving in the middle of hte road instead of in their own damn lane
85 st and 144th ave NW were no fun either, stuck behind some minvan doing 20, was okay once i got onto highway 2 though
blowing snow reduced visibility to 0 at some points where I couldnt even see my headlights anymore...that sucked
I should have worked from home todayI predict my drive home after work will be even more entertaining

I started to go to Lethbridge this morning, but with the blowing snow decided I would not risk my life and came home instead!

What happened yesterday is there was a long lineup on 52nd street approaching 130th ave as it goes down from 2 lanes to 1. Now that there's the new set of lights there people aren't moving left as early as they try to be in a lead at the lights. (Which in the driving thread we have mentioned why it works better to merge in over time as opposed to right as the lane ends... but I digress)
This morning I did the jerk manuvre and stayed in the right lane on 52 until I was past the lights and merged in. I noticed the line in the left lane wasn't as long this morning, and then alomst everybody was going straight at 130th instead of turning left.
So my guess is everybody who was in the traffic jam yesterday all decided to try the traffic circle instead today. So same traffic jam; just a new location.

Today's issue I saw was that people couldn't see the lanes, so instead of 2 lanes there were more than a few people who just drove in the middle. Net result - traffic volumes squeezed into a single lane and jokers polishing the ice causing multi-block back-ups.

I hate strugglers. Like the loser I was stuck behind in the monster line up in the left lane on WB 16th trying to turn south on 29th st. She kept leaving two car lengths in front of her and people kept bypassing the long line, assumably to flip a Uey on NB 29 and evade the long wait, but then they'd see the ###### in front of me with 900ft of space, and they'd pull in.
This is what causes road rage. This kind of stupidity makes me want to take a tire iron to her windows. If you're too scared to drive, take habby's advice and get a fUUUUUU'in bus pass or take a taxi or stay home. Yeesh.
