I preferred Angels & Demons to the Da Vinci Code but never found DVC to be THAT objectionable....perhaps the way you "read" impaired your potential enjoyment? I've discovered that while I am a fan of the idea of books on tape - I just can't listen to them and enjoy them the way I enjoy actual books.

I never read Davinci Code, but I had lots of people tell me to read it. It's only recently that people have been saying that it wasn't very good.

They identified themselves as friends... but now I am not so sure. I never read it because of all the hoopla around it, I figured it was just a bit of a fad.

I'm officially putting Nonfiction-travel on the block. I'd say "food and drink" too--but I think at this point that's like trying to trade Anders Eriksson.

I'd be interested in either. What are you looking for in return?

The one thing that Mr. Brown did exceptionally well - one might even say perfectly - is what's called "information release". He held onto information that the reader wanted to have right up until the moment that you are ready to throw the book down in frustration, then at that moment he would give you just enough to keep you reading.
It's textbook thriller-writing and Brown did it very well. As far as plot construction, imaginativeness, metaphor, creativity go as well as basic description, character development, or story structure he's mediocre to poor.
He hit a nerve (Christianity) and rode a tidal wave of hype to millions and millions of dollars. He deserves credit - but no admiration.
And Angels and Demons is exactly the same book as Da Vinci Code.

If you are going to read it, I'd suggest reading the books in order as A&D actually came first and then the DVC.....fairly decent reading as it is all as plausible as any books of the genre to be honest. They didn't turn me into a big Dan Brown fan but they were a fun few hours of reading to be sure.

I guess my issue with the information release - which I agree he managed - was that it became so quickly obvious the major twists I was just sort of wanting him to get on with it. That and the fact that if I read the phrase "feminine" whatever it was (I can't remember off the top of my head) one more time I was going to throw open the Emergency Exit door and jump. And you're absolutely right about it hitting a nerve, and Troutman - totally agree - I bought it used to kill time for the main reason that I was just trying to find out what the entire world apparently knew about.

Maybe we should have called it Fantastic Literature - I actually had an English course at UWO called that. Not just hobbits and dwarves. Includes works like Kafka.

If it is anything at all like what troutman was allegedly doing to his Borje Salming hockey card, then no, I don't want to know....
